Reminds me of The Office when they think they will go out of business.

How much is Dr. Hammond paying himself? The tone of this article suggests we should feel sorry for him and I simply can't without knowing what he makes. He sells dietary supplements and doesn't accept Medicaid patients. Really? And we are to feel sorry for him? I feel worse for those on Medicaid that can't get decent care.

Most of the commenters are estimating that the doctors are taking in $210,000 and the support staff averages $70K, with nurses and PA's making more and techs making less of course.
Like many practices it is likely a pass-through setup, where cash in becomes salary out. Even the net profit is being distributed as a bonus to all employees. The issue here is that the doctors invested a substantial sum to establish the practice in the first place, and this investment is only kicking off $29K a year. Why bother to invest at all if they could join a larger firm, earn the same salary, and keep their investment cash for other purposes? In business this type of situation (and it is common to many occupations, not just health) is called "buying yourself a job" and a poor use of personal capital. |

I think the name of the article is a bit misleading but it brings up valid points.

Let's toss around some hypothetical numbers:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Total bankroll: $1,731,600 - - - Bonuses:$29,261 / 25 employees = $1,170 - - - Employees: $1,100,000 / 22 = $50,000 Average employee salary: $50,000 + $1,170 = $51,170 - - - Docs:$1,731,600 - $1,100,000 = $631,600 $631,600 / 3 doctors = $210,533 Average doctor salary: $210,533 + $1,170 = $211,703 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Soo the housekeepers, receptionists, and nurses make fifty grand on average. The docs take home 200k+. Doesn't that seem right for family med? Edit: Doesn't that seem really good for family med? Last edited by ScamWow; 03-15-2012 at 12:11 PM. |

That WSJ piece should be renamed "Why private practice/primary care is dead."

Furthermore, the employees aren't just receptionists and housekeepers. Some are professionals in nursing, social work, etc and so are going to be making quite a bit more than $51,000 minus fringe.
