If anything, being around all this academic elitism culture will inspire people to continue into academic medicine and take large pay cuts. The basic thing that usually happens is whatever school you look are at, for example U of Chicago, they will tend to have a lot of matches at their home hospital, around Chicago, and then the midwest (why?? because most of their students are from that area). I would say majority of match lists work this way, if you are from area X, most students want to do residency in area X. For instance, a school that has put a handful of students every year in elite academic derm residencies around the country would be appropriate for a student who is interested in academic derm regardless of location. This student would want the resources (mentors, research, peers) that facilitated the education of those previous students who matched in ways that this student would want to match. This last bit is important. The objection to this view is that what a school does to its students doesn't matter; it's all up to the student. I don't think that's true.

Yes, it's possible someone could have ranked university of south Alabama or western community bumblefck neurosurg #1 and been heartbroken to match at Columbia but most people who match at top tier academic programs are deciding between other top tier academic programs.

I realize this is only one perspective, and in a different specialty than urology, and I will also concede that the bigger star you are, the less of an issue this becomes. Just my thoughts. That said, there are some schools that seem to pump out 7-10 derm matches each year, which is impressive and probably at least partially reflects the relatively strong presence the department has among students at that school. |
