there is already a good derm vs. ophto thread and I don't want to open up a new one as of lifestyle, diagnostic pros and cons, etc., but just focus on salary this time. My situation is this: I live in Europe and have a realistic chance of getting either a derm or ophtho residency in Switzerland. I am writing my diploma thesis in derm, which would give me an advantage in that field, but my ophtho rotation was amazing. I can imagine myself in either field. So, in the end, it comes down to one thing (as stupid as it may sound): Who will earn more? An ophthalmologic surgeon, specializing on either cataract or retinal surgery. Or a dermatologic surgeon, performing MOHs and superficial cosmetic procedures. It must be noted that on the long run I would like to move to a gulf country, such as Kuwait, Emirates or Saudi. Just from that aspect, ophtho would be a better choice, since derms is very poorly developed over there. But hey, maybe that opens unique opportunities, too? Responses welcome |
