How is the housing search going for anyone? I think I want to live by myself if I can find a reasonably priced place taht will let me have my golden retriever and my cat, anyone have any good suggestions? I've found a few places and bookmarked them, I'm going to the open house on April 21 and gonna do some house hunting then!

The vet school hosts an annual open house for the community to come in and see what it does. There is a lot of stuff geared toward getting kids interested, and Kathy gives an admissions talk. It's fun, and if you are an accepted student, it gives you the chance to wander around figuring more out about the layout of the school/hospital with no one judging you lol. If anyone is thinking about coming, definitely stop by! A bunch of first years have been recruited, so if nothing else, you can chat us up. I'll be giving tours in the hospital! (the tours are not like typical ones given for interviewees... It's more structured and the different departments have displays and fun things set up)

There are lots of tasks that need to be done before the event, so it's definitely possible to not have to actually work the day of.

Where all have you bookmarked to check out? I'm 90% sure I found a place, but still want to know where people are looking!
Congrats, by the way!

I am looking at a couple of the Mills properties (apts...any current students know anything about them? ie are they undergrad party places?) brookside duplexes and sentinel properties are my top choices so far, if I live by myself. If I met an upperclassman with a nice place and they are roommate-able then I would consider that. Where are you looking? Do you have any pets that you are trying to bring?

I'm going to be bringing one of the family dogs, although it's currently a topic of debate which one I get to bring. A lot of upperclassmen who have openings next year have been advertising on facebook, so I went and saw a bunch of places the weekend before last. I'm waiting to hear back from some ladies at Jenne Hill to see if I get to live with them next year! It's beautiful, super reasonable, and there aren't any restrictions on pets- if all goes as planned, there will be 3 dogs and a cat there next year!
I didn't look at any of the places you mentioned, but they all sure look nice. Another option my mom (and me, I guess) played around with for a while was buying a house and renting out some of the rooms. I think it's terrifying, but it might be cheaper in the long run... Anyway, if you're interested in finding roommates, there's definitely a lot of people looking on facebook. I can totally understand why you'd want to live alone though, too.

I think I know those ladies! Jenne Hill is really nice, and I like the area (I live about 5 mins from them). It's an easy drive to class, too.

Guys, after sending your acceptance form to Missouri, have you heard anything from school? I sent mine about month ago, and the deposit has not been charged yet, and i did not get any confirmation e-mail, or any documents - nothing. So i worry a little.

Try not to worry too much. They don't give much notice about if they received it, and they won't cash checks until some date that the main campus determines, so it seems really late! I'm sure they will tell you if they don't get a response though

You can call them to confirm that they received your deposit. I did, and the lady was soooo nice (of course!)!! She also said they won't cash your check until she can actually register us as students and put us in our class, so it'll be a little while still. No worries! Call the office if you're worried.

I also called the school to ask if they got my acceptance form and they looked it up for me (they were very nice). But I was curious when I would know more about the orientations so I asked someone I know that goes there now and she said that it took around a month before she heard about the orientations. I sent mine about a month ago too and haven't heard anything yet so maybe they are just going to send all the information at once after the April 15th deadline.

I was just wondering if any upperclassmen could let me know how difficult it is to find a job in the summer after your first year in order to make the $2000 for IS residency.

When I went on the tour the guide said that most of the OOS students get jobs doing research for the school or working in the lab. I am just not sure if I could find something with 60 other OOS'ers looking for work over the summer.

Thanks!

The research program is mildly competitive, but nowhere NEAR all 60 apply for it. For instance, I didn't. I have a job that I know will cover my $2000. Get decent grades (~3.0) and you should be good.

Some people are lazy and don't get residency.

Also... very possible to work during the school year, just probably not a TON, and you will have to sacrifice other things.

I just mentioned the school as an employer as I felt I had the greatest chance of getting a job with them and I just mentioned research because the guide really emphasized it, I actually have very little research experience and would prefer doing something else. I would accept anything of course to get the $2000.
If I can get a decent job with low hours during the year I am not against working while in school.

A huge selling point for me is IS rates so I just wanted to know how likely I can get a job. Since its not a definite thing I am a little cautious about accepting my offer.

Well, if you were resourceful and committed enough to get into vet school, then you should be more than qualified to find a job here.

Hey Breenie, since you're an OOS'er who earned residency this year, you're probably a good person to ask this-
I read something about having to document that you were in the state the whole year and didn't leave for any extended period in the admissions stuff. I think I recall seeing that you had to provide pay stubs or something from a job as proof...but if you don't work during the school year, how on earth does that work? Any ideas? (Thanks, lady!! )

We're trekkin' down to Columbia this Friday to check out a whole bungload of housing options! Hooray!

Well you need to work to make $2000. If you don't do that, no residency.

UNLESS you are getting residency through your husband? Is he getting a job? If he gets a job when you move down, you get an immediate tuition break and get residency for this year.

Which are you planning to do? Paystubs only necessary for option one.

The sheet says as long as your in classes you dont have to work. The issue is with the summer based on the guidelines. I have read over the sheet and they get very specific about having employment during the entire summer. I was hoping to work limited hours during the year to make the $2000 but it appears it might be worth it to make all the money during the summer as the guidelines say I need a paystub every week in the summer. What if my job lays me off a week or two before the end of the summer? I am not sure if I was able to find a job at the vet school whether they make sure to keep me employed every week in the summer to meet the residency requirements or not.
