Default Do you think I'll get accepted next cycle?

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
Hey guys, so these are my stats and I'm looking to start in the Fall of 2012. I'm applying to 15 schools (listed below). Do you think I'll have a shot at any of these schools, would you add/remove some and should I apply to a Masters as a back-up plan?

What are your thoughts? Thank you in advance for all your help.

My DAT Scores:

PAT: 18
QR: 20
RC: 20
Bio: 21
GC: 20
OC: 22
TS: 21
AA: 21

GPA: 3.65/sGPA: 3.6

List of schools:

1. University at Buffalo
2. Stony Brook
3. Georgia
4. UPenn
5. Columbia
6. Maryland
7. Case Western
8. Temple
9. Tufts
10. Bu
11. NYU
12. UMDNJ
13. LECOM
14. U of Pacific
15. San Antonio
16. Houston

What do you guys think?

I think you can narrow down a lot of the schools you have on your list to save yourself the application fees, secondary fees, and transportation costs.

Choose the schools you genuinely want to attend.

i hope you mean that you want to start in fall of 2013 because you have no shot at starting this fall.

also, some of your schools on the list don't seem to fit together so well. almost entirely northeast, but then you have georgia (are you a resident?), lecom, a couple in texas, and uop. i could understand uop, but the others don't make much sense.

your stats are fine. how is the rest of you application? shadowing, ec's, personal statement, letters? those are the areas that will really set you apart from every other 3.6/21AA out there.

Apply to only maybe 5-9 schools. That's my advice. As long as you apply realistically and intelligently, there's no reason you can't get at least five acceptances from that list.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I want to start in the fall of 2013 (I mis-spoke earlier). The reason I chose Georgia is because a family friend sits on the admissions committee (so I said why not give it a shot) and lecom is a relatively new program so I assume their stats will be relatively low (an admissions rep told me they will look for an AA of 17-so its a safety school, but the ones in Texas were quite random. Well noted.

I have over 200 shadowing hours (I've shadowed 3 different dentists-general, ortho, oral surgeon) since 12th grade, and I volunteer not only at church where I am very active but also in other organizations and with the Red Cross locally.

EC: I am in student government, Pres of the Pre-Health Club, and VP of the Red Cross Club. And I do research.

I do need to work on my PS/mock interviews.

Sounds like a good list. I think LECOM will surprise people with the stats of their first class. I bet their gpa and dat will be competitive.

Really? That'll be interesting. We can only wait to find out, except from what I've heard/seen from new schools opening they always go with the average scores to attract students first because they still need to build a reputation as a school.

Unless you considerably lack social skills, you should get in somewhere with those stats.

Take off Texas schools unless you are a Texas resident.

Yes, remove Texas schools and add VCU in.

Your stats are really good. 15 schools are good. Dont apply to less than 10 schools. Dont save a few bucks then waste a year... Apply early.

Thanks for your advice! Out of curiousity, why do recommend adding VCU?

VCU is a great school and holds 35 of the 95 seats for non-residents, which is a really good for a state school. Also, your stats are right on par with the averages for VCU, so you have a decent shot at an interview.

You will get in somewhere for sure, just make sure you have some experience in the field of dentistry before you apply. I would also suggest applying to MWU-IL. You will get in there if you apply early enough, that way you will always have something to fall back on (Not a jab at the school for those of you attending. I am only saying this because it is so expensive).

Edit: Also, my honest opinion is that you should just send your app. to all the schools you listed. You only pay a one time fee at AADSAS, so why not?

The AADSAS fee increases for every school you add and then you factor in the secondary fee for each school. It adds up quick. Not to mention if you have to a bunch of pre-Dec interviews, that's ALOT of flying and hotel/car costs.

I would narrow it down a little bit to around 12-13. Take out the Texas schools and LECOM. Maybe add the Midwesterns.

My mistake about the fee...It was a year ago when I did this. What I was thinking of is that you have to pay an increased rate to get your app. sent out to schools after you have made your initial destination decisions.

~40% OOS. Good school. New facility. Nice faculty.
