Default Flight Surgery Salary

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
I am going active duty in July and am trying to get a realistic picture of what income I can budget for as I'm looking for housing.

My understanding is essentially the equation is something like this...

Base pay (o-3 with 0 years) + BAH + bonus (15?) + flight pay if flight status...

Anything I'm missing? Thanks.

Yeah flight pay will be $150/month, but don't expect it to start until several months after arrival. Also BAS, which is something like $240/month. You may also be able to moonlight for an additional $2-3K/month but definitely wouldn't factor that into your budgeting.

I thought while in a military residency you weren't allowed to moonlight

He won't be in residency if he is doing flight surgery.

Base pay (O-3 with 1 year, internship should count regardless of civ or mil) + BAH + BAS + VSP (416 ? when licensed) + ASP (15k) + flight pay (starts at 125 for 0 years aviation service and you actually have to fly)

If you ask me, it's not worth it
just kidding...
i think.....

so by your math i can expect:

3771 + 1392 + 223 + 416 + 125 = 5,927 monthly
5,927 X 12 = 71,124 + 15,000 (ASP) = 86,124 annual gross income.

Does that seem to correlate with other flight surgeon pay coming from a transitional year? Will I just get paid base pay during my training period at WP AFB? Will I get paid starting July 1 or not until after I complete my PCS? I have already applied for my unrestricted PA license, and it will be finalized June 30 when my internship sends in confirmation to PA... what else do I need to do with this to get that VSP? Finally, what parts of that income are taxable?

Thanks for your input.

You should have AD orders which start July 1. Either you PCS to your gaining base then go to AMP, or you go TDY en route. In either case, you should start getting paid as soon you report. You'll get base pay, BAS, and BAH for your PCS location, not AMP. VSP is automatic, you don't need to do anything. You have to apply for your ASP and get it signed by your commander. Sometimes they do this for your at AMP, just ask about it at your gaining base when you inprocess. Also remember you won't get your flight pay for a while, expect to be on station about 3 months before you get everything done to start flying.

Everything except BAH and BAS is taxable.

Your base pay will go up each year for your next 3 years.

The ASP carries with it a 1 year concurrent ADSC, so keep this in mind when you are planning for residency.

Hope this helps.
