The Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program within the Division of Behavioral Sleep Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine has an opening for a chief polysomnogram (PSG) technician. The mission of the BSMP is to investigate the neurobehavioral causes, consequences, and treatments of insomnia and sleep loss. The Chief Polysomnography Technician opening is a supervisory position, which involves running a state-of-the-art ambulatory polysomnographic research service designed to study sleep unattended in the home environment . The candidate will directly supervise several technicians. The candidate must be flexible, organized, and enjoy creative technical problem solving in a fast paced medical research environment with changing and novel data acquisition demands. The ideal candidate will have an interest in the science and questions underlying the work and desire to establish a long-term career on the cutting edge of sleep science.

Duties include: • Training technicians and staff in wiring subjects for sleep studies. • Sleep scoring, training, ensuring, and demonstrating reliability of all lab sleep scoring. • Work with principal investigators to develop and configure standard and novel sleep montages for a variety of acquisition packages. • Develop lab data storage and management system and procedures. • Supervise and ensure data integrity of PSG files. • Supervise 3-4 PSG Technologists and other research staff on sleep-study-related functions • Maintain equipment and supplies needed for ongoing sleep studies. • Research and provide advice on new equipment and supplies. • Schedule and coordinate staffing for nightly sleep studies. • Learn and conduct related psychophysical tests associated with various research protocols, including but not limited to o laboratory pain testing involving administering standardized noxious stimuli (e.g., cold heat, pressure, punctate probes, electrical stimulation, etc) to various anatomic sites, o full 32+ channel polysomnographic sleep studies, including placement of surface electrodes and other biometric sensors on the subject's body (scalp, face, legs, etc.) per standardized guidelines. This includes EEG, EMG, EOG, nasal cannula, oral nasal thermister, pulse oxygen sensors, ECG, etc. o electrocardiograms o phlebotomy and IV placement The degree of effort dedicated to all of the above duties is variable depending on various project needs and flow.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree required. Minimum of two years experience as a PSG technician required with RPSGT certification, which must be maintained during duration of employment. If the candidate does not currently hold the RPSGT certificate, they must become certified within 120 days of employment. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Experience hooking up and monitoring sleep studies, ability to stage/score polysomnograms (PSGs). Must be CPR certified by American Red Cross or within two months of employment. Must be phlebotomy certified within two months of employment. Strong computer and information system skills are required. Position requires the flexible implementation of these various test procedures in a variety of settings and locations per multiple approved research protocols. Will require working late evening shifts (roughly 12pm to 8PM), several days per week as determined by ongoing projects and involves traveling to subjects' homes to conduct procedures or pick up equipment. Applicants must possess good interpersonal skills and be comfortable working closely with others. Candidates must have their own transportation, and a valid driver's license. Mileage and gas consumption used in the conduct of in-home test procedures will be reimbursed.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
