Here are just a couple of the DPT programs on offer: Melbourne Bond Masters: Sydney Bachelors: CSU USA Sydney Newcastle Australian PTs teaching in the US Queensland PT grad working in NYC Appearantly you can complete your PT degree (either: Bachelors, Masters, or DPT/DPhysio... doesn't matter) at any of the Australian schools, and you can come back to the US and work. The only requirements to come back are to sit the NPTE exam (something US grads have to do anyways) and do a 6 month stint "residency" in a hospital upon returning which is nothing. This would be a great way to both get an overseas experience... and upon graduation, to be able to have the option to work in 2 countries! If you haven't been to Australia before you should go. How do the Australian DPT schools admission requirements compare to the US DPT programs? Can a US student get financial aid over there?

I don't think there is any financial aid. Some schools do have scholarships, but these are usually only 1-3k or so per year and are given to students who perform in the top in their class (depending on the university and program). Most Canadian and American students who attend, vet, dental, medical, physio school etc in Australia or New Zealand.. usually get a combination of student loans from their government and private banks. If you have any questions about how to obtain loans. You may want to post in the Australia forums or pre-vet forums and ask them how they obtained their loans. |

Thanks for your response. The program at Bond University looks appealing. As does the one at Melbourne. I wonder how the cost of study compares?

Total cost for the Melbourne program is $83,550 AUD or $72,504 USD The Bond doctor of physiotherapy program is 2-2.5 years and the Melbourne doctor of physiotherapy program is 3 years. Bond is on a tri-semester system and they have really short holiday breaks, so their courses in general are usually a bit shorter because of it. Again.. just as a reminder. You can also do the accredited BSPT or MSPT programs in Australia too and the pathway to get licensed in the states afterwards is exactly the same as if you did the DPT programs. So, just don't rule out those options if you really want to study in Australia... because they will all have the same result of allowing you to become a licensed PT in Australia and the US/Canada (after the 6mo "residency" requirement). How hard is it to get in Australia's program? My GPA and such are not so great, but I know i can get into at least 1 of the 100 programs we have in the states. How many PT programs are there in AUS?
For example, with my grades and such, there is no way i could ever get into USC, NYU, etc...because there is SO MANY PEOPLE applying there. Some schools have over 200 qualified applicants but could only take 40. Avg. acceptance rate GPA was 3.9 because they took the top of the top, rejecting many 3.7 GPA students! But talking to smaller colleges and private schools admissions committee (especially in boring cities no one wants to live in), they say I have a pretty good chance. So, I don't want to waste my time applying to these AUSSIE schools if they are just another NYU, USC, etc., to me. Thanks Last edited by SuperKirby; 11-15-2008 at 10:58 PM. |

Hi,
I am currently a DPT student in the USA and am looking to work in Australia once completed. I wanted to know what steps need to be taken to do this? Also, what kind of residency are offered for overseas PTs? My course work also requires me to do clinical rotations while a student. Do you know of any clinics/hospitals in Australia willing to set up student affiliation from outside Australia? I am specifically looking into the Perth, WA area. Any advice, suggestions are greatly appreciated! Cheers! |
