Failing Step 3 Consequences?

I found out Monday that I Matched into a program and am debating taking Step 3 before beginning residency to get it out of the way.

Are there really any consequences (apart from having to pay again) if I fail? I mean I'm trying to find a reason why not to give it a go right now.

My UWSA last week was certainly not stellar (440/204) but I'm content with just passing this exam and be done with it...

Thoughts?

Usually this is based on the rules of the state. If the state requires you to pass all Steps within 7 attempts and it took you 6 attempts to complete everything but Step 3, failing could be a big problem. Many programs want you to get a full license or at least be able to get a full license. Some states require you to pass Step 3 within 1, 2, or 3 attempts. Which is it for your state? If it is 1-2 attempts, you might want to study harder than if there is no limit in that state.

You are probably fine to sign up once you receive your diploma if you want to get it over with, but check the rules of your state to know what you are getting into.

I wanted to do the same thing you're planning, but it's not really possible if you're a currently matriculated American student. The biggest problem is that you can't apply for the test until you have your diploma. Since you won't get your diploma until May, and you'll start orientation in June, the time between receiving your diploma and having your application approved so that you can schedule the test is almost certainly going to be too tight. It definitely was for me. On the other hand, if you already graduated and have your diploma, then by all means, take Step 3 now and get it out of the way.

One other possible snafu is that some states require you to have done a certain number of months of residency before you can sit for the test, especially if you're an IMG. Some states also require you to apply for a license at the same time that you apply for the test. You can get around both of those problems by taking the test in a state that does not have those requirements. I'm from FL, which does not have any training or licensing requirements to sit for Step 3, so that's one state you could consider.

I already have my Scheduling permit as I am an IMG and was considering getting it done in case I needed my results to help with SOAP but I already matched so not a big deal.

The state failing limit isn't a big concern for me. I think the strictest state in regards to limits is 2 "attempts" for Step 3 (Alaska and Idaho) so I'm gonna give it a go try next month.

Does "attempts" mean you can fail it twice and pass on third try?
