Honestly, even if she goes to the best program out there, won't she lose money in the long run?

Maybe, but some people aren't in this field for money...

To be fair, most folks I know pursuing a doctorate are in it "only to practice" in the long run. (And many don't lose out on that much money with funded programs available...)

compared to whom? hedge fund managers? sure.

are you referring to tuition costs, lifetime earning potential, earnings lost during years of training (relative to folks who work full time after the BA)?

have you seen starting professor salaries? there is an opening for a psychologist at a community college in my area--teach 10 semester courses over the year, plus 5.5 OH/week, committee work, etc. it may come with benefits, but other than that, some adjunct gigs pay better per class than the low end of the starting salary range (<50K).

Wow; is there a hard-and-fast limit on how many can just be different sections of the same class?

From what I was able to glean they are separate classes with separate lectures. Seems like a pretty standard deal for the community colleges in my area. I have a friend who went to a state s/he found to be inhospitable (for a number of reasons) who took a 5 + 5 + 2 gig for $40K because it was the only offer besides adjuncting. And multiple new preps with texts selected by the school and not available until either shortly before or even after classes began.
