To be fair, most folks I know pursuing a doctorate are in it "only to practice" in the long run. (And many don't lose out on that much money with funded programs available...)

are you referring to tuition costs, lifetime earning potential, earnings lost during years of training (relative to folks who work full time after the BA)? have you seen starting professor salaries? there is an opening for a psychologist at a community college in my area--teach 10 semester courses over the year, plus 5.5 OH/week, committee work, etc. it may come with benefits, but other than that, some adjunct gigs pay better per class than the low end of the starting salary range (<50K). |
