Default nrmp and non-match programs

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
Dear forum members,

If one has a NRMP violation, can the NRMP ban him or her from joining a "non-match" program?

Will the NRMP send a copy of their report to that "non-match" program if that person joined a "non-match" program?

If an institution has programs that participates in the Match, but also has few programs that do not, does the NRMP have control over those programs that do not participate in the match? Will the NRMP send a copy of their report to that institution, even though the program itself does not participate in the match? If one has a NRMP violation, can he or she join a program that does not participate in the match if the institution has other programs that do participate in the match? In other words, can he or she join that "non-match" program even though the institution that houses that "non-match" program has other programs that participate in the match?

Thanks.

The NRMP can't tell non-participating programs what to do (or not to do).

An institution might decide to use an NRMP violation as evidence of unprofessionalism, and on that count decide not to hire you (even to a non-match program). However the NRMP can't "insist" nor bring any real pressure on an institution.

I wish that were true.

If the non-match, non-NRMP program is affiliated with a hospital that has other NRMP participating programs (other NRMP residencies) the non-NRMP program can be pressured to release the candidate by the NRMP. The NRMP threatens "investigations" of the non-match program as well as the match practices of the other NRMP affiliated programs since they are at the same hospital or "umbrella institution". It's wrong and completely overboard IMO but that's the type of power the NRMP has been given somehow. A candidate I knew personally played it by the rules, filed the waivers, was released by their original match PD under good terms and lost their non-match spot after the NRMP threatened/intiated investigations of the non-NRMP program and affiliates as described above. All said and done, they were left with no match regardless of their formal appeal and explanation. The NRMP just doesn't listen, didn't care, and appears to be bloated with power.

Sign the petition to reign in the NRMP here on SDN and maybe there will be more attention drawn to the growing problem.
