What are you looking for in a hospital? And when are you going?
I'll tell you a bit about Sydney... Royal North Shore Hospital is where I'm based, and I think it's a great place, especially if you're coming sometime next year - they're building a brand new hospital that will be finished in December. Royal Prince Alfred, St. Vincent's, and Prince of Wales are also highly-regarded. If you're interested in pediatrics, Westmead is the best place. Westmead also has a lot of dental students and allied health students. And it's in a very culturally diverse area, if that's what you're looking for. St. Vincent's is practically in downtown Sydney. Royal Prince Alfred is right next to the University of Sydney, which is where I am, and is not too far from downtown (10-minute bus ride). Prince of Wales is right next to the University of New South Wales, which is also a good school, but not as close to the city (30-minute bus ride). Royal North Shore is in a somewhat wealthier area, and also not far from the city (15-minute train ride) |

You still haven't told us where you're from, what you're looking for in an elective, etc. There is no "best hospital" in Sydney - the public hospitals are all at approximately the same level, with minor differences here and there. Give us a bit more info and we can recommend something.

At Royal North Shore, the student coordinator is an Edinburgh graduate. I've seen many Scottish visiting students here. You should look into that.

Hi everyone, Im a 3rd year medicine student in Spain. I looking forward to do an elective in some english spoken country, so I can improve my english level and my medical knowledge both at the same time.
I have been looking around, but I just read elective offerts for students in 4th or higher year. Does anyone know if there are hospitals in Australia that allows 3rd year students to do electives there? I want to do it next summer so I would have already finished my 3rd year. thank youu! |

I don't know how its over there. Here in Spain we do a 6 year degree in medicine, and then we do residence which is 4/5 years depending on the speciality you choose. I guess this part is similar everywhere So I am in my 3rd year of those 6. And what I wanted is that, to go to an hospital maybe 4 weeks and follow a doctor so I can see different surgeries and things... |

In that case, I don't really know. You could probably arrange something if you just want to observe surgery, but I'm not sure how you'd go about doing it.

Thanks for the useful advice. I'm looking to apply for elective in either Prince of Wales or St vincent's hospital for 4 weeks during Feb/Mar 2014. Will this period be overlapped with local medical student's summer vacation or any public holiday when there will be no clinical teaching in the ward?

I'm not sure about UNSW (PoW and St. V's are UNSW hospitals), but USyd won't be on vacation at that time. You could just check the course dates on their website.
