The mistakes that you made seem to be a product of panic so just try to remind yourself to stay calm on test day. Just go in with an optimistic attitude and you'll do great.
You're right... as long as I learn from these mistakes, I should be fine. I started off never finishing PS sections on time and after 3 practice tests of panicking because I was running out of time, I finally overcame that. This time I was panicking because everything looked so different than what I was becoming accustomed to in the other AAMC's. None of the AAMC's were this calculation heavy and I was able to do most of them in my head. I used the same approach this time with this exam - doing the math in my head, but there were way too many. I checked my answers and my mistakes were ridiculous - like not noticing that it was cm and I need to convert to m or not multiplying exponents properly. Like seriously, I need to write these calculations down next time. That was stupid of me.

Thanks. Very true... I just need to work on the small things and be more attentive on the next tests

Okay! I will try to stay calm between today and the day of the test. Not sure how that will work out, though. Haha

Half of the MCAT is keeping your composure.

If you keep your composure, your calculations will naturally be accurate and you will recall concepts and be able to break things down. It's obvious that you know your stuff. MCAT is a scary test for sure, but once you get past the psychological aspect, you can definitely achieve your target score.

I think I panicked before I started this test because everyone said it was really hard, so I went into it expecting it to kill me. Not a good idea. I think I'm gonna assume that AAMC was the hardest thing in the world, and my MCAT on Thursday is going to be a piece of cake.

All your posts come off as dickish if you didn't already know. You see there are people getting sub 10s constantly on these sections and here you are saying "you haven't done this bad..."

Is anything other than a 15 considered bad? Get off your high horse.

I haven't done AAMC 11 in awhile, but expect the real MCAT to be more similar to AAMC 11 than any of the previous tests. Try to look through the ebola passage carefully because our exam may very well be littered with experimental passages.

You likely know your stuff judging from the scores of your previous exams but just get in a habit of being able to break down really dense passages and questions while keeping your composure.

You got this.

Whoa there...we don't need this sort of attitude, not two days before the exam anyways.

I don't know why everyone freaks out about the test. People go crazy saying "Ahhh, the Ebola passage was the worst thing in the world ahhhhhhh". I don't know what everyone freaks out about, the passage isn't that complicated, if anything, I feel like the information is presented much more straightforward than most passages. There's a few more calculations in the PS section, but it's not like they're horribly complicated or convoluted

lol i know man, but this guy/girl keeps posting things like "Omg i did so bad" or "zomg horrible" when they are getting scores that are 7-10 pts higher than everyone else lol. Like what's the point of posting stuff like that and phrasing it that way?

Either way I've got 1min 10 seconds left for my break before BS lol, brb!

It was so hard that you actually GET Ebola afterwards.

I don't know why but I thought this was so funny.

--

Luvahgilahsa: I understand you're worried since you've done really well in the past AAMCs, but this last score could've been a result of burn out, panic, etc. Clearly you have the ability to score well; don't let one test bring you down. In response to Fivo calling your posts "dickish" ..well, c'mon now, a lot of us haven't passed 33 or even broken 30 so it'd be nice if some consideration could be given to the way you're writing your posts. I was thinking of saying something, too, albeit with gentler words.

--

And for the people just about to take AAMC 11: DON'T READ WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS SAYING ABOUT IT. Don't go into one of these freaked out. It'll just mess you up! Stay calm and know the answers are in the passage (unless it's a discrete then obviously not ).

Thanks a lot! I also feel like the fact that people have said these sections are super hard really made me a nervous wreck. I started the PS section expecting it to be SO hard and honestly, looking back at it now, I don't know what I was thinking! I got all the passage-based questions correct (except for 1) and the stuff that I did get wrong is so easy! Errors were either a miscalculation or second-guessing my answers by making them more complicated than they are. Same goes for BS. Up until passage IV I made no errors but then I got lost reading the cP-450 passage, panicked during the orgo passage as usual, and then I saw the Ebola passage and just admitted defeat before even giving myself a chance to figure it out.

All-in-all it was a great experience. I learned to double-check the answer for units and that if I'm beginning to panic then I probably shouldn't change my answers. Additionally... I learned that I forgot minor things that I will brush up on TBR books. I just hope the real MCAT has easier orgo passages because it's the one thing I just can't get right for the life of me.

Great! Sounds like you got even more out of AAMC 11 than just the test. Knowing how to control your attitude during test day is very important for sure. Obviously you and everyone else on these forums are better than anything the AAMC can throw at us.

Is anyone getting nervous about the writing component? Some Canadian schools I'm applying to actually use the writing component as a cutoff so it's beginning to make me nervous.
I don't know what I'm gonna do if I can't think of an appropriate example for a prompt

I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I have really crappy GPA, so this is my only shot of getting into Med School. I am aiming for over a 35, so this is bad for me. Consider my 12 to be a 10. That's how my standard is in order for me to get into med school.

I have been getting 12 or above on BS for the past 6-7 AAMC tests. This is definitely lower than usual.
Also, I have been getting 13 or above on PS, so this is still lower than I expected.

I didn't come here to brag, I'm here to vent out my frustration at my ever lowering AAMC scores. I don't want to start fights.
Peace

Well excuse my language. If you haven't noticed, a lot of people on SDN score somewhere around 35 on their MCAT. I read that from a MCAT score compilation post somewhere.

Therefore, I don't think complaining and freaking out about a 33 would come off as offensive, especially there are a lot of people that have scored better.

Thank you for the encouragement!

I will try to keep calm during my test. I wonder if there's pre test exercises I should do? Sometimes during these tests, especially the timed ones, I freak out so bad that I forget everything... Especially during Verbal, I totally blank out and don't know what I'm reading even though I could normally.

I think you need to remember that (most) people on SDN are not representative of everyone take the MCAT. The average MCAT score is in the mid 20s. Not everyone is shooting for 35+. Hell, I'm shooting for 30, and I would accept high 20s.

I'm not worrying about it at all since schools in the US don't really care much about it. It sucks that Canadian schools are so numbers oriented (in this case letter oriented) vs looking at the whole applicant. I'm Canadian too, but applying in US only (low gpa).

I know that. My point is, since a lot of people on SDN get 35+, and many are shooting for who knows 40+, I didn't think my complaint about my 33 was "dickish" especially after it dropping from a 37 two days ago.

Imagine if you went from a 30 to a 26, wouldn't you be concerned too?

I'm done studying! Taking the rest of the night and all of tomorrow off. All I have allowed myself to refresh on are hormones, physics formulas, and certain ochem reactions!

I need to clear my head so I'll be unsubscribing from this thread in the next hour.

Good luck to everyone Thursday! We're going to rock this shet!

Thanks, my biggest concern is freaking out on the actual exam and do even worse. I have the tendency to freak out pretty bad and mess up on really simple things.
Anyways, I don't think being so offensive to someone after their scores drop so significantly does anyone any good.

I believe the avg is a 25. So that means ~50% get lower than that, and a 35 is like 90 percentile.

However i don't think its fair to call someone snooty because they are aiming for a higher score. For some ppl getting a B is good, for others its unacceptable. My buddy is applying to podiatry so to him 24 + is fine, for me that would be a major disappointment. Lets try and keep it positive in here.

I hope we all hit our targets and have very successful applications! less than two days till d-day, we got this!!!!!!!:beer::beer::thu mbup:

I hope they don't have any of those passages PERIOD.
What do you mean by the chart? Are you referring to the Ebola graph?

---AAMC 11 SPOILER ALERT FOLKS!----

If that's the case basically they are showing three different cultures. You have wild-type WT, then you have negative CatB and positive CatL (meaning this culture already has CatL), and then you have negative for both. Then they are introducing just bacterial, CatB, and CatL to those cultures. In the first culture with positive CatL, if you are given additional CatL it doesn't really make a difference in the total number of infected cells. However, if you are given CatB to a culture that already has CatL, then it increases it by a lot! Likewise, in the last culture that has negative CatB and L, if you are given both CatB and CatL genes, then it increases by a lot but not if you're just given catB or L by itself. In conclusion - % of infected cells is increased and* only affected by the introduction of both catb and catL.

But I'm sure you knew that =)

Yes, I was talking about the Ebola graph.
Ohhh that makes a lot of sense. So the stuff on the top means the media with these protease added to it? Okay that makes a lot of sense. Thank you
I didn't know what the CatB-/- and Cat+/+ etc meant so I kinda just guessed on the whole passage after 20 minutes of trying to decipher the graph.
I think I lack experimental interpretation skills. hmmmmm

UGH!

29 (10B, 7V, 12B) on AAMC #11. F^&$ that exam, holy hell!

Verbal scares me... if I score this low on the real thing I will be extremely disappointed in myself.

Ok and about the smooth ER and Golgi Apparatus...

So you guys are trying to tell me that ribosomes are found on the golgi apparatus? Because it seems to me like the defining characteristic between smooth and rough ER is the ribosomes. If the rough ER transports vesicles to the golgi, then you're saying that the golgi must have ribosomes on it as well..?

Someone has some 'splainin to do.

What is the context for you saying that there must be ribosomes on the golgi?

Haha no problem! I'm pretty bad at graph-interpretation myself but I think we've encountered so many different types of data presentation that hopefully we should be set for the real deal

Finished AAMC11:

PS: 11
VR: 10
BS: 10

That was harder than I remember. Bio seemed on par with the real thing. PS was definitely math intensive. VR was whatever. I thought I did better in PS but I guess not.

AAMC 7-11 average: 31.4

I just want to break a damn 30 on this thing!!

btw, I'm in the same boat of you MCAT wise...so I feel your pain on the 33 not being good enough. I got a 34 on AAMC 11 and was really pissed (12-10-12). I think we just need to be confident on the real thing and focus. At that point, you can't really be disappointed in the score you know? Just gotta take the test the best way we can. And I was staring at that chart for like 5 mins hahahha. I hated that, and I certainly would hope that there aren't any passages like that. 2 would be horrible though.

Thank you, I'm glad that someone knows that for some people 33 is not good enough. I need to get in this round, or else I have nothing to do after graduation...
I don't get why some people don't understand that some people have higher standards...

Anyways. Good luck to you! I hope we can all get the score we want.

Peace
You keep mentioning your crappy GPA. Just out of curiosity, what do you consider a crappy GPA??

Like a lot of people have said, a big component of this exam is confidence, so don't let this one exam freak you out. You can obviously get a high score so just trust your ability. And yeah, I understand both your sides (hate that about myself lol). Nerves are running high for everyone with just one full day left, so I think we all just need to chill out.

However, as to you saying "I don't get why some people don't understand that some people have higher standards..." I really don't think that Fivo's comment about your post was because of people having lower standards. It's just that some are having a much more difficult time reaching that higher goal, that's all. And while you did say you didn't come to brag, it can come off that way to some people. (Personally, I couldn't care less what other people are scoring; it doesn't help/hurt me one way or another.) You mentioned you have a lower GPA which is why you're hoping for a 35-37+. What is it anyway (just curious, if you don't mind sharing)? I don't have a great GPA either so I probably should be shooting for a score as high as you are.

I'll try to do some 'splainin . I don't think anyone said there are ribosomes on the golgi (at least I didn't..). You said that proteins are transported from the smooth er to the golgi, but the smooth er isn't involved with protein synthesis; that's the rough er. Sooo, unless we're all misunderstanding/mis-reading each other's posts (which wouldn't be a first around here).. uh, yeah, that's what I meant. Nothin' about the golgi having ribosomes on it.

for the life of me I cannot understand this equation
can someone kindly volunteer to explain it to me( I mean I understand what it is, but when I am give a value for I for example, I have a hard time figuring out Db and vice versa

Db = 10log[ I ÷ I0 ]

p.s.this is the equation for Sound Decibels

Well, I think everyone has their own goals, and are allowed to talk about their frustrations when they don't reach their goal. I'm not here to make brag nor make fun of other people.

Out of the sciences that Med schools actually look at, I have B/B- in Bio and B in Chem, A in Physics, and A- in Orgo. I'm in a liberal arts school, and I have to take a lot of writing/history classes, so A LOT of B's in those as well. I do have some A's in my major classes, but apparently nutrition doesn't count as science... so I onno... I think my science GPA is pretty low, not that my overall is any better.

I know that feels! I was so depressed to find out underwater basket weaving didn't count for a science either!!

no, we are saying that Ribosomes are found on the Rough ER (which is found in the Cytoplasm) and this is where some of the proteins are synthesized..after the proteins are synthesized in the RER they get transported to the Golgi apparatus and then they are packed and shipped with other things

now the smooth ER is not involved in protein synthesis..Smooth ER regulates calcium ,it is responsible for Detoxification of drugs, Cholesterol metabolism,etc....

p.s.I think they have similar names because they look similar not because they function similarly and it looks like you did well on the biology section..do you mind giving me some tips? (I keep bombing the B.S. section even though I feel really confident when I am choosing my answers lol )
