I am a incoming P1 and a little anxious about what i might be ahead but i want to know some of the harrowing stories or any crazy experience that any of you have experienced or are experiencing.

Start networking like crazy. Get your foot in the door at every pharmacy/hospital you can think of. Make your name known because jobs will be fought hard, and your fellow students will be merciless.

If you laid your eyes on the first hot pharm colleague you see, proceed to immediately ask her out or else she might become your friend and get a boyfriend behind your back.

I was once at a party and trying to show off by opening a bottle of sparkling apple cider with a sword and because someone had arrived late, the bottle had warmed and thus causing the back pressure to make the bottle fly out of my hands. I caught the bottle by the broken part of the neck and sliced a few of my fingers. I started bleeding on the guy's white carpet and someone got a WWII suture kit and wanted to practice surgeon on my hand (damn pharmacists thinking they are doctors!)

ps If you read this Jeff...sorry about that.

Party + sparkling apple cider....I think we deserve an explanation of:
A) Why you were not showing off by opening beer/any type of beverage that contains alcohol?
B) Who the hell keeps a WWII Suture kit just laying around?

You don't question the sword?

I had a patient a few weeks ago asking about motion sickness meds because her family was going on a cruise. They enjoyed the cruise and no one got sick. Harrowing.

Have you tried cheesecake yet? We use crushed vanilla wafers for the crust and a sour cream based topping.

Whats HARROWING is that I have to wake up at 6:30am cuz my second rotation starts at 8am.

The MOST harrowing part is this isn't a "job" so I have no vacation days...I must get up at 6:30am Monday to Fridays...suck so bad...so harrowing. At least on a job I can take off whenever I want.

Seems the only time I make cheesecake is around thanksgiving and end up making pumpkin cheesecake (LOVE pumpkin anything). I haven't had a vanilla wafer in ages. Argh...I want one now.

Well, this is after pharmacy school. By my wife and I are having a harrowing story buying a house right now.

A newly finished spec home in a very desirable location. The builder put it up on the market at a reasonable price, then I guess they need to free up cashflow for the next phase of construction, lowered the price by $20K after just 10 days. We looked at it, liked it, and market analysis showed the cheapest comparable sold for only $5K less than that. So we made an initial offer Saturday $25K lower than asking, figure haggling will yield a pretty good deal at roughly half of that. Their agent verbally told us that the builder will likely only be willing to move $9-12K off. So we figured a deal +/- $2-3K of our expectation is likely. Set an appointment for Monday with him for final negotiation and paper work. We even took our baby to check out the house in detail again on Sunday.

But comes today, the first thing we set down, the agent tells that that he made a mistake on Saturday. He claims that he wasn't aware the builder had lower the price $20K already, that the $9-12K off he told us was based on the previous price. That lame and cheap tactic got on my wrong side right away. We reiterated that our offer is based on the correct number, and his mistake has no bearing on our offer. So he "calls the builder", comes back with $6K off. We talked in private for a few. Our realtor agreed that it's a trick, but reinforced that the market analysis shows the house is indeed worth at least that, especially with good location and market slowly improving. But wife is right there with me saying: we came with the expectation of ~$12K off, if anything we must not budge just on principle of not give into dirty games. (God I love it when she throws it down right beside me). We went back in with the final offer, $11K off. He "calls his boss" again, say at most only $7K "my boss says there is literally no profit margin left, we would only be making like $100 bucks. Look around, we are not a distressed property"... We just said "no", shook hands just to be polite and walked out.

I was fuming driving all the way back. It felt like we just left a used car dealership. What a waste of 2 hours! Then roughly 6 PM, while I was at the gym working off some steam, our realtor calls me: the agent just contacted him and agreed to the last offer. I told him, have the agent spell out the "last offer" he's referring to, put on paper and fax it to me or else I'm not wasting another minute of my time on him. Our realtor will get that from him tomorrow morning. I'm not holding my breath, god knows what other shenanigan he might try to pull.

Anyway. That's my harrowing story for the day.

Yuck, your post made me realize that my MBA program is actually rubbing off on me. I'd be running a linear step-wise regression on housing variables for the area and wouldn't pay more than a couple percent higher than what I came up with.

Let's see what's his version of the final deal is on paper. If its $11k off that we offered, then yes. He deserves to be penalized some more just for playing that dirty game, but I negotiate in good faith.

Trying to penalize him further also means I have to waste more time dealing with that slimy bastard for what, at most another $1-2k off?. No, once we have achieved our objective, we will honor the final offer and move on to our other objectives in life. I hope he learned not to try pull another one on us tomorrow.

How long we waited? Almost a year after I finished my residency and moved here. It took this long to save up 20% down, then figure where we want to live, pick out a realtor. We started looking at houses in earnest about 6 weeks ago.

Dude I feel you on this, I've got rental property and have flipped a few houses, and the games played are RIDICULOUS! How some realtors/property owners consider themselves "professionals" is beyond me. I've have tons of foreclosed homes where I've put an offer in when there were no others and the all of the sudden a "second offer" magically appears right with mine and they want your highest and best offer; then you walk away and most times they call u back and say "guess what the other party backed out", would be one thing if it only happened a few times, but that is a tactic commonly used, it's downright illegal, but near impossible to prove. Another tactic, is asset managers playing hardball and being willing to counter by only knocking 1-2k off the price of a distressed property....now I know why my dad built most of his rentals. Bunch of Idiots.

Another tactic, is asset managers playing hardball and being willing to counter by only knocking 1-2k off the price of a distressed property....now I know why my dad built most of his rentals. Bunch of Idiots.
It seems a lot of folks are having this issue

Update: the guy basically offers what my final offer was. I said ok, now we are past the price, these are the things that needs to be fixed before closing. We noted 2 problems when we looked at it. The roof divers rain water to in front of the main entence, obvioulsy a design flaw that calls for a short gutter where that is. The kitchen counter top has an open hole where the side sprayer should be, my guess is a worker took it.

Anyway, he went back to playing hardball, that the house is as is and I will have to pay for the corrections. This is even after i offer to compromise to just have a short gutter. My realtor is trying to convince me they aren't going to fix it and it's a good deal. My wife and I think if they won't fix an obvious design/building flaw, what good will their warranty be? So we decided to not even reply, and move on to look at another house this weekend that we are interested in. We got another 3 months left on the lease, cost me nothing to delay picking a home. In fact it cost me money to close early and pay both mortgage and rent. Mean while that builder is losing at least $100 a day, advertising it, paying loans, electricity, and office staff. They might figure out eventually it might be cheaper to fix it than play more games. Trying to play hardball in a buyers market... What are they thinking?

Oh yeah? I almost got a C in a class too... but got a D instead.

And this was at the end of my third year before I went on final year rotations. Dropped my overall GPA down to a 3.03 too.

How's that for harrowing?

Your paid vacation days are limited but you are welcome to take any day off unpaid of course...which I am okay with. I don't care if I don't get paid for the days I take off. As long as I am off when I want to be off I am good.

You work when you feel like it and they pay you what you think is fair. You also only do stuff you think you should. After all, you went to school for a long time - why shouldn't you get to decide what your job is?

Obviously you can't take days off last minute, but if I knew I needed days off in advance I do not see why I can't just tell them that and take off. If I knew right now that I need July 17th to 18th off, August 23rd to 26th off and Sept 12 to 16th off etc. I can tell them now in June and it should be fine. As long as you tell them in advance I don't see the problem. If I am not getting paided why do they care?
