I honestly think everyone can do well in general chem, even if you hate or suck at math. Gen chem doesn't expose you to calculus or any hard math concept. Some algebra and some proportions. No trig work either, a lot of "plug and chug." If you want upper level bio, enroll in the courses. Chemistry lends itself nicely to learn biochem. Other than genetics (and alas, human anat this fall), I won't have any bio class other than bio 1 and 2

Khan Academy will be your friend. Watch all his chem series and you will ace chem.
At my university all chem major need to take some upper div bios like Genetics, Bio Chem, Toxicology and a few others. We get exposure to all the sciences. In all reality all this knowledge will be out the window when we hit Pod school. Who cares if I can read a NMR, or do Partical in a Box lol. |

Didnt want to make a new thread since its kind of in line with this topic.
I will have room for extra sciences classes my senior year and maybe one or two my junior. What upper level bio classes would you guys recommend I will only have had the pre reqs (in the way of sciences). Also would It be too demanding and or pointless to take an upper level bio in my junior year on top of physics, Ochem, my 2 psych capstones and a foreign language in one semester (mind you it will be my first year at a Uni.), Or do you think it is, doable and worth doing. Thanks guys. BTW I got a 100% on my latest math test i think i found my problem and fixed it. |

I mean.... it probably doesn't matter. I never took human anatomy (Bio 2 lab had a fetal pig dissection, but other than that), and so I'm taking it this fall. My adviser sort of strong-armed me into it. She is also under the impression that I am taking physiology next spring... Yeah.... we'll see about that.

Every pod/med student I have ever talked to has said that there is "no way" to prepare yourself for pod school. And in terms of classes they recommend, they literally have all said, "Any classes you WANT to take." The stuff you learn in undergrad is a pittance compared to professional school. So their advice was to enjoy college, because pod school sucks. But that's just my experience. I always welcome other opinions, especially those that frequent this site. Speaking of, I haven't seen bobdolerson in a while.. |

But being that my major is psych and your majors are heavy sciences (chemistry ect. even though it's not alot of bios it shows rigor), Would it be needed for me to take these upper bio's even if it's senior year.
I just dont see how taking 2 upper bios my senior year will affect my chances of acceptance since I will have applied before the semester even starts. I would hope it would help my chances I just dont know though. |

The only way it will matter, I think, is if you did poorly on your pre reqs and you needed to show the adcoms that you are capable of doing well in science courses. I'm not sure how this works if you are applying before you get a grade in those classes, but they might give you props for trying? |

Don't take physical chemistry. Its a nightmare.
I'm not taking any more sciences classes that are required for me to get a BS in chemistry. I want to enjoy my senior year. |

I completely forgot to mention my interview with OCPM. There, the Dean mentioned to all us interviewees that we were here because of our academic success as well as our desire to push ourselves past the required expectations. She emphasized that students who challenge themselves in college with more upper division courses have a far better chance at gaining acceptance as say someone who ONLY took the bare minimum in required courses.

Glad to hear even though this is just what I was afraid of, Heres the thing Fiesty I will be transferring from a CC and it would be tough for me to squeeze in an extra science let alone upper div bio before junior year is over. This could possible hurt my GPA if I try, Im set to be a psych major btw (I know I repeated some of this info but its just incase anyone didnt read the old post). It sounds like I will be at a disadvantage for taking the 4 pre reqs only, If this is truly the case then I will just have to suck it up and prep for 3 labs a semester or just switch to a bio/public health/other science ect. degree I have 5 days until I early register for classes so I can change my major up until then. ![]() Very Confused right now![]() I really like psych but if all this is true then majoring in psych at this point will hurt me for sure. Any suggestions on majors that dont require math beyond Stats but emphasis science.

What I meant was for you to challenge yourself. It doesn't HAVE to be via upper division bio courses. I interpret the schools as basically disliking people who goof off their senior year and take something like, intro to woodworking and/or puppetry. If your schedule is packed and you're taking all these psych courses, they won't hold it against u. I guess I didn't understand how busy you were.

I register Tommorow I still dont know if I should do G chem 1 or an Intro I really want an A in all chem courses (IK IK).
I guess the deciding factor is if the Pod schools look down on me for taking an Intro course. I register tommorow at 9am Help !! And to Fiesty thank you for the advice I will be kind of loaded down but I will still try to put in a course or two junior year(if i can) and undoubtedly senior year. |
