Hello

I am a first year medical student (M1) at the "Lebanese American University" located in Lebanon and chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. It is a fully accredited university by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

The university is seeking professional accreditation for the medical program like LCME and ACGME and for the hospital (JCI) but yet doesn't have it.

I have many questions:

1- what are my chances to get accepted to a residency in the united states as an international student ? will be any difficulties because we don't have the professional accreditation yet ? what are the chances to get accepted to residency in Canada ?

2- if I did the internship in Lebanon, can I still enter residency in the USA ?

3- if I did the residency in Lebanon, can I do the fellowship in USA or Canada and what are my chances to get accepted ? Can I practice in the USA or Canada?

4- is their any country that its residency is recognized in the USA besides CANADA? Like U.K and Australia for example?

5- I heard that it is extremely difficult for international student to get accepted in the U.S residency program. ?

6- Can you provide me with with a plan for Step 1,2,3. When I do each exam (which year) if I want to apply to USA as international student? and are those same exams required for CANADA ?

Thanks

Is it ECFMG recognized? Do you have a valid visa (J-1 physician waiver or green card; H1B is very rarely acceptable)? Have you passed the USMLE?

If you answered no to any of those questions, no you cannot get a residency in the US.

You are required to complete a residency (several states require extended residencies for FMGs) before applying for fellowships except in some very special cases. If your residency abroad was recognized, you can shave some years off a US residency.

This year I will enter the medical school. So I didn't set for the USMLE yet
and I don't have a visa. I want to apply when I want to go for residency; or how the system works ??

everyone who complete step 1 and 2 will be recognized as ECFMG, right?

What about CANADA, it is easier ? What are there requirements for residency programs for international students ?

are you talking about american university of beirut? if so, then you are totally fine. its regarded as one of the best international schools, with very high admission standards.

do well on step 1 and step 2, and when applying for residencies, you should have no problem matching

The #1 requirement is a visa. If you don't have one, don't waste your time dreaming about getting a residency in Canada/USA.
