[Survey] Average GPAs in 2nd, 3rd and 4th year

Hi all,

I'm curious as to what people have observed as the average GPAs given (NOT YOUR GPA!) at their institution for the coursework they have taken in 2nd, 3rd and 4th year (or equivalent for each). (I would post 1st year as well, but the grading system changed at my school at the 1st year is difficult to convert to 4.0 scale)

If you're interested, please do the following:

ID, School, 2nd yr GPA, 3rd yr GPA, 4th yr GPA.

(Use the class averages given on your transcripts for the coursework at each level to calculate them! Just to clarify: IF you took a "3rd year" course in your 4th year, use it for the 3rd year calculation. Match coursework, not freshman/sophomore/junior/senior status)

How can this possibly be meaningful? At my university, I'm sure the average GPA of a communications major was close to a 4.0 (take that back, maybe 2.0 considering all the sorority girls....) whereas an engineering student would be more in the 2.5-3.0 range because of difficulty. Business school is graded on a true bell curve, so avg GPA set at 2.0 for business classes, but I guess it depended on what other Gen Ed requirements people took. So really, you need to break this up by department/college, since they're all going to have different policies on grade inflation. I guess we could assume only the GPA's of bio majors, in which case I'm out of the game anyways.

Maybe I'm just not understanding what you're going for...

It's more of a curiosity than a true rigorous comparison. Like I say, if you're interested participate, otherwise don't. I do agree with all of your points though.

I guess MedPR and Praefectus will be re-applicants next year... 'cause they're certainly not going to be accepted based on their maturity.

I've already been accepted to JHU, HMS, Stanford, WashU, and Cornell. Oh, and all with full-tuition scholarships.

sometimes that's just what it takes, unfortunately.

personally, i'm just surprised at how people have an incessant need to boo-boo this thread or that thread on SDN. it's a childish behaviour, and really unbecoming of people who are intending of studying medicine, where you are going to be inundated with seemingly "silly" or "stupid" questions from patients all the time... humour is fine in lounge areas or on topics where it is appropriate..and if you can't tell the difference, then i sure hope your patients and mentors will be forgiving.

either (1) contribute to a thread because you have something useful to say; or (2) ignore it because it doesn't interest you, or god-forbid, is "stupid".

a little maturity goes a long way.

Probably. But you could ignore it. That negative reaction wasn't necessary.
