Default International work post-MD?

Does anybody know of any programs where one can gain clinical experience post-MD, but before a residency? preferably with research component? Some programs like MSF don't take those who haven't completed a residency, and sometimes are required to have been in practice a while too. . .

A friend of mine managed to secure a volunteer research position at the NIH right after he graduated. I think he did it for 8 months. He had some visa issues and so he lost his residency position and so he decided to do this until everything was cleared. He matched the next year.

Default Tons of opportunity - but you need to do a lot of work to find it

I'm doing just that...taking time off before residency to go abroad. I could write a book with what I know but thankfully someone has done that for us all. Here's the link to his book: A Practical Guide to Global Health Service
Another good site to check out is http://www.globalhealth-ec.org/. If you come up with a project idea look at public health universities for sponsorship. Doing something between med school and residency will limit your chances for funding so take a loan out if you are really interested in doing something.

Thanks so much for the book info, it seems that once you get through residency it is easier to secure funding via organizations like MSF.

Incidentally, most orgs want you to have a license, which means completing an internship and taking Step III. And the better trained you are (that is, the more years of residency you've completed), the more useful you'll be in resource-poor settings.

If you speak French I highly recommend applying for the Schweitzer Fellowship at Lambarene, which is only open to US 4th yrs.
