Got the letter from TOURO NY today- I've got a 3.65 cum gpa, 3.8 sci gpa, but the 22 MCAT did me in.

gezz I was sure I was going to be starting up this thread today when I check my mailbox in an hour... you beat me to it. Don't worry, your GPA is awesome, someone will give you a chance. But I have a feeling I will be adding to this thread too. with the rest of the process, hopefully we'll be able to post in the cool kids "official thread" soon enough

I think there's another rejection thread too but it got lost along the way.

And sorry about the rejection. I'm sure plenty other schools would love to have you. I have a 22 MCAT also and received the secondary from Touro-NV but it was before they had my MCAT score. I'm just waiting for the axe to fall now.

So far every DO school with pre-screening has zapped me, except for DMU (who I am not entirely sure if they pre-screen, but they say they do). Last cycle, I even got an interview from an MD school (EVMS) who pre-screened, and I did not meet their requirements. I was under the impression that DO schools were the ones who looked past the numbers. Especially in unusual situations like mine. Oh well.

Yeah it was post secondary. What burns me is that they usually screen pre-secondary. They gave me the secondary, took my money, and rejected me. I was hurt too. It was one of my top choices. Oh well.

That sucks about DMU. That is wierd about DMU bc it is not like they can really gain any new info about you from the secondary since there are no essays.

How long ago were you complete at DMU? I am wondering when I can expect my rejection.

That's what I was thinking. If they were going to reject you why not just do it pre-secondary. This is what I think will happen if I submit Touro-NV so I'll probably just skip it. I'm assuming they didn't really tell you why, right?

How long ago were you complete at DMU? I am wondering when I can expect my rejection.

I was complete sometime in July, got the rejection in August.

Nah, I didn't call to find out yet. I figured why bother I have 3 other interviews. Apparently it wasn't meant to be.

I know! Pretty harsh, huh? They suggested that I check out their postbac program to strengthen my overall application, but they didn't specify exactly what did me in. I'm 100% sure it was my MCAT.

Oh well, 12 more schools to hear from!

Some of these post-bac programs look pretty sweet. If I don't get in this time, I'm going to do the MS in Medical Science (1-year) that TCOM offers. They re-prep you for the MCAT, and you take a bunch of med-school-like science courses. Anatomy, histology, etc.

To be honest, I'm really scared now! The only thing I've received so far is LECOM-Erie telling me what I still need to send in to be complete. I'm actually not complete at any schools yet because I'm still waiting on my DO letter. Amazingly enough I'm already getting impatient. on the rest of your schools!

For post-bacc programs, not masters, can you get student loans? If so would they come out of undergraduate loan allowances?

TX has the College Access Loan. Check it out. I paid for a lot of my post-bac stuff (i.e., second bachelors) with that.

Yeah, I agree. I'm interested in doing one too if I don't get in this cycle . . . but I'm trying to stay positive and hopeful (yet realistic)!

I hope neither of us needs to do a bostbac next year and everything works out for us this year!

Is this your first time applying? I applied 2 years ago, 2 allo interviews (out of state), and rejections across the board, including crickets chirping from the TX schools. I didn't know much about DO school though, and only applied to TCOM.

Since then, I've learned a lot, and also about where I should apply. If I had known then what I know now, I'd probably be in my 2nd year of med school right now. Maybe not.

But if I have to re-apply, I will have to re-take the MCAT, because it will be too old for most places. I'd rather not go through it again, but I will if I have to. And there is something to be said for entering med school with a lot of those classes (from the post-bac) under your belt and fresh in your mind.

But yeah... all things being equal, I am really tired of applying to medical school. I'm tired of entering in every single class I've ever taken for 3 application services, I'm tired of writing personal statements, and I'm tired of secondary applications. I'm tired of staring at my blackberry, waiting for the red light to come on (indicating e-mail), and then being pissed when its one of my friends and not a med school.

I'd just as soon get in this time. Hopefully you won't have to go through this nonsense that I did.

By the way, I have been officially un-rejected from Touro-CA, so I will alter the list accordingly.

Dude, I TOTALLY feel you! This is my first time applying to med school, but I've taken the MCAT twice and done horribly both times. I just can't find enough time to study for the damn thing! I had to work through college and now that I've graduated I was pulling 50 hour workweeks while trying to study for the MCAT every night after work and on the weekends (and that didn't cut it)!

I'm already sick of writing personal statements, filling out secondary apps and worrying incessantly about not getting in and having to apply again next year.

However, I really feel like this is your year! You've got an awesome MCAT, great GPA trend, interesting EC's . . . I think you're there!

BTW, I'm glad you were un-rejected from TOURO-CA! They were my #1 choice since I live about 30 miles away (and it really seems like a great school).

would you mind outlining some of the things 'you wish you had known' for those of us in our first cycle

I wish I had known...

- More about DO schools
- Which MD schools are more likely to look at non-traditional applicants like me

I only applied to one DO school (TCOM), because I just didn't know anything about it. I kind of thought that I'd be stuck in family practice if I went the DO route, so I didn't apply to them. Nothing against family practice, and I may very well end up there, but I want to have options, and now I know that I will have plenty of options if I go to a DO school. I didn't really understand that then.

Had I started volunteering earlier, I would have worked closely with DO's, and learned this. That was a big weakness in my first application: very little clinical experience. I had just started volunteering at the trauma center. Now I am a fixture there, and I love it.

Really, I just feel like I have a better overall understanding of the entire process. I feel more comfortable with it, and I think I will interview better because of it. Time will tell, of course, but I think I get in this year.

The thing about my application is that there isn't much middle ground for looking at it. I think you either look at it, see the upward trend and the MCAT, and think that I've got it all together now, and you just love it, or you see the 2.2 GPA from a notoriously easy degree plan, sporadic performance, a guy who used to be a bartender and a big partier, and you just hate it. And I think I've applied to enough of the right schools this time where I won't fall victim to the numbers.

The adcoms have not met to decide the fate of the first round of interviewers yet - as far as I know.

Yeah I'm guessing that would have been pre or post-secondary rejection. Stinks either way.

DON’T GIVE UP! I am 35 Y.O. and just got in. My Original GPA for undergrad was just below a 3. After a master’s degree plus post baccalaureate classes they have finally shown love to me. If this is what you truly want and can’t see doing anything else at being 65 years old, DON’T GIVE UP!

I was rejected from CCOM a few weeks ago but i just got my new MCAT scores and I improved by 8 points to a 29Q. I was wondering if I could ask them to reconsider my application in light of my new MCAT scores? What do you think?

Midwestern gets a ton of applications, so I'm not sure you'll have a lot of luck. That said, there is no reason not to try. Call Admissions. If the person who answers the phone says no, call back the next day and ask to speak to Michael Laken (Director of Admissions) and plead your case to him. Can't hurt you!

Did they put you on hold or have you not heard anything from them? I'm on hold at VCOM and haven't heard a peep from 9 schools. Hang in there, good news is coming your way soon, I know it.

You know the funny thing is it was not anywhere near the top of our list but it still kind of hurts. I posted in the Touro-NV thread about what happened but I guess it would help to put it here too.

I received the supplemental back in September but they didn't have my MCAT score yet. I thought that was weird because they have rough cut-offs at around a 23 for MCAT and I got a 22. So I e-mailed Corbman if I should still submit it and this is what he replied: "Due to your MCAT score of 22, you will not receive a supplemental application. Thank you." What aggravates me is that I already received it. I guess in this case Corbman can giveth and Corbman can taketh away. I'm just concerned because my husband and I have had trouble getting one of the letters for the PCOMs so we've basically taken those off our list and now Touro-NV so we have 11 schools left. I'm about to get on my hands and knees and beg my DO to get the LOR done.
