Default NBDE part 1 score 91

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
I got my score a few days ago and it is 91. My raw scores are the following:

Anatomy: 84
Bio/Phys: 77
Micro/Path: 82
DA: 87

I studied firstaid NBDE part 1 and the deck. I did 96, 98, 2000, and 2004 released old exams and scored (raw) right around what I got for the real exam except the biochem/physio which I usually scored above 80. I am a bit disappointed by the bio/physio section.

I can share my experience with you SDN members. I know how you are feeling if you are preparing for NBDE part 1. I will try my best to answer your questions. Good luck to all of you.

Thank you dentgod. I didn't use kaplan review notes rather I studied firstaid NBDE. I looked at some kaplan qbank questions though. However, I personally think that kaplan qbank is not geared toward NBDE. The kaplan qbank is not only much more difficult than the actual test, but it also contains too many irrelevant questions. I think doing a lot of old exams is the key! I hope this helps. Good luck!

Default Low score

Hi Jspark,
Congrats. I took the NBDE-1 and got a very low score. I just wanted to ask should I take it really soon to meet the deadlines or should I wait? Also is the firstaid NBDE same as USMLE firstaid?
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your help.

I am not sure what is better...to retake soon or later. but if I were in your shoe, I would retake it as soon as possible because I think the longer break you have, the more material you would forget.

I compared firstaid NBDE and USMLE, and I think NBDE is better because it is organized better. Also, firstaid USMLE has too many irrelevant information for NBDE such as behavioral science, too much detail on devo and path, etc. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi dentbaby,

no, I only did 96, 98, 2000, and 2004. I studied for 5 weeks and it was very overwhelming to do all of them. I wish I had more time to study for it but I have a wedding to prepare which is TOMORROW!!

I am sure it is better to do more old exams so do as much as you can! Good luck

Hi, I am sure everyone has different method of studying. Here is my way. The very first time I read the firstaid, I took my time and tried to understand and memorize every single concept. If I think I can't memorize something I would make my own mnemonic to do so. Then I reviewed with the deck. If I was unsure whether I remember a concept I wrote that down on my note for a final review. Finally I did the old exams. So the answer to your question would be I read the papers once fully, and only used them to refer to later.

Hi, congrates!
is there a score conversion chart for reference and if yes, where can i find it? Do u think solving old question papers helps?
I'm studying decks 09 and want to do released Q papers from 1990-till the most recent. Is this sufficient? I was told the old Qpapers doesnt help since the formate has change now. What do u think?

Hi anniestar,

first of all, I am sorry for the late reply. I just got back from honeymoon. My answer to your question is both. You will see a small number of exact repeats and more of distorted but similar concept qs. Hope this helps

Hi tropicalpheonix,

My answer is the old questions absolutely helps! doing all the qs from 1990 til the most recent would be more than enough. I only did 4 different years'. Like I said before, deck helps but I only used them to review after finishing firstaid. hope this helps.

Thank you guys

Hi, I don't know where to find them but my big gave it to me. I have a pdf version but it has writings all over so it may not be good to test yourself. Let me know if you want it by pm

Hi maiya,

To be honest, I am not sure what to tell you because I don't know how you study, but let me still try. The range of information you have to know to do well on NBDE is very broad. It is close to impossible to study and remember everything. What is possible is to forget less than the others. Study one concept and whenever you see related information, try your best to regurgitate the concept and apply to a situation. Writing your own notes always helps. I wish you the best.

Congrats Buddy!

Ok, the format of the exam is 400 mixed questions, so you won't know when you will get anatomy, biochem, etc. The first section consists of 200 questions. First 160 questions are regular multiple choice questions and the last 40 are clinical case questions. You will be given 3 hours for this section and there is a 30 minute optional break after this section. Then you start the second section which starts you off with 40 clinical case questions and the later 160 questions are regular mc. You have a plenty of time so don't worry. I took restroom break during the second section and I still had 40 more minutes at the end. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi guys

I was doing the canadian eligibility exame up untill now and eventhough my score was high I am not sure if I would make it to the university due to shortage of seat here and highly competetives clinical exams!
so I decided to try the nbde1 before they change the system!
would you pleas help me and give me some info how to prep for the exam!
I am also looking for some old exams if someone have them would you pleas share it with me?
Thank you so much

Hi,
JPark9 thanks for your help. I received all your reading materials. I am sure this will help to me to get a good score. Also there is another question that I would like to asked you. I am an international student and in order to get into a dental school what would be a good score that I need to get?, and is it true from next year 2010 NBDE part-I and II will be combined and students who will be taking exam next year will need to take part-I and II together...????

Once again Thanks for your help....!!!!

As far as postgrad residency admission is concerned, it really depends on which residency you are interested. The more popular it is, the more difficult to get into. For instance, if you are trying out for ortho or oral surgery, you must have a top of the line record such as top 5% rank with 93 and above board (I am guessing). However, I heard prostho or pedo are less competitive compared to the other two.

I am not sure about the combined board from 2010. I heard about it once before but I don't think it will be so soon. I hope this helps. Good luck again.
