who else is getting screwed with all the budget cuts? I swear my university is trying to keep students on the decade plan to earn some extra money. I'm signed up to register at 8 am, and all my classes I need already are wait listed/full.

Default This is what you get for screwball politics.

By various measures California is among the top 10 economies in the world and yet the state is broke and Californians mooch about 1,000 medical MS1 seats a year off the rest of the country.

If you want to get decent state supported higher education California should: 1) raise undergraduate tuition to $10,000 per year; 2)cut its prison population below 100,000; 3) have a realistic residential property tax where every homeowner pays property taxes equal to 1% of market value; and 4) end collective bargaining with public employees.

Do those things and you will have rational government and get the classes you need.

I'm worried about that happening, my registration date isn't until 12/03 :-/. Not to mention there are only THREE OChem II classes with ~50 spots per class...

Already done at the end of this year!

On that note, I don't think my next quarter classes will be effected by the budget crisis, at least not directly. All of them are core classes for some major or another. My lab class this quarter got 3x easier compared to last year though because they reduced TA support by 50% so they took out multiple assignments and labs! =D

Luckily I got to register early for this semester and got in all of my classes. When registration was open to everyone else the next day, the waitlist on each of my classes was full! I really hope I can get into Chem and Bio next semester. I was so mad when they raised tuition and made me pay the difference. I really hope they won't raise prices anymore...

QFT.

The UCs also need to be careful that they don't drive away their best professors while they're broke. Many professors have standing or recurrent offers from other top schools, but stay because they like the area, the system, etc. I know many of them would not stay if they were making 10-20% less or if they get the feeling that the system is trying to screw them.

Edit: I'd also like to point out to all the people that are complaining about the tuition hikes: the UC system is still the cheapest college system in the country, yet they manage to offer a world class education. I'd love to have everything free, but it isn't realistic. Having $40k in debt after four years (if you're paying for everything yourself) is pretty good, most private schools now cost more than that every year.

I know I've already posted it before, but I still want to post it again!

1. They canceled all my grants and told me I was not eligible for the grant at the LAST MINUTE. And they gave me 300 bucks sympathy money (for one year, which is 100 bucks per quarter, lol), which was not even enough to cover my fall quarter's textbooks.

2. I hope I won't have troubles to register for any classes though, but I've heard they did cut a lot of classes

What was the reason? Your parent's income too high?

Yeah, they said my parents' income was too high (because they were based on 2008 data). I mean it's ok not to get any money, and I understand the budget cut. But why didn't they just tell me in the first place? They kind of raised my hope up (because they told me they were going to give me 7,000 dollars) and then told me that I was not eligible and I wouldn't get any money. I sent tons of paperwork and wrote two appeal letters, and they gave me 300 dollars?! I'm just so disappointed

I'm sorry that I am being a whiner. I guess I'm still one of those lucky people. A lot of my friends' parents got laid off and some friends were not able to go to school this year. At least my dad still has a job (my mom got laid off about 6 months ago) and we are doing ok. I should be grateful

Even Stanford is auctioning off an estimated billion dollars worth of real estate and other illiquid assets. But, the kids in Palo Alto are probably not hurting that much.

What's up with the CSUs? They're only taking students in the fall, and allowing only a maximum of 12 or 15 units per semester or something like that?

i read that tons of folks are going back to school because of this economic turd we're in... lots of people out of work reenrolling in school could be a contributing factor to your enrollment woes.

One of my friends is only taking one class at CSU because he wasn't able to enroll for other classes (they were all full )

Yea I heard CSUs have it worse than the UCs. I heard Cal Poly Pomona might get rid of any major with <150 people! Something like 30-60 majors gone!

My friend told me there is no school on Friday at CSULA. I don't know if that's true though.

Probably because they cut down on many of the classes... it's tough, I feel bad for them.

They are required to take a certain # of "furlough" days now per semester -- so basically students don't go to class, but they usually have to do some kind of learning at home (ie: watching an educational video online or do an online assignment).

I don't think it's necessarily the budget cuts. I have a hypothesis as to why Biology classes fill up quickly:

5 of my friend are pre-med and none of them are earning degrees in the School of Biological Sciences...yet, they are able to enroll in biology classes. This is NOT true of the other disciplines! For example, I couldn't enroll in computer science courses until I was a student in the School of Computer Science, nor could I take upper-division math courses until I was a math major. But, I COULD take upper-division Biology classes without being in biology or a related field! Since I was in the honors program I got first dibs and I always enrolled in 3+ biology courses before everyone else, even before the bio majors. I ended up taking 75% of courses for the biology degree without being in biology, and THEN I applied for the 3rd degree.

This budget cuts and fee increases are really affecting us a lot. For one, Less and less classes are being offered, which puts a great deal of pressure on people who are about to graduate or complete their pre-reqs for med school, law school, or any other graduate programs.

This is really becoming too much, its affecting Californians so much that many are stopping going to school or moving out of state.

I don't know about other schools but here if a prereq is full before you can register your adviser can usually open up a seat for you? When I needed to take calc and all the classes were full and I told them I couldn't go on because I needed a ton of calc for my major and it would delay everything they just put me into some random class :/

I've HEARD (haven't done it myself though) that you can also do the same for grad school prereqs.
I guess it does still suck not being able to pick time/teacher though

I would agree with the cops part since cops in my city get paid around 60K a year for doing absolutely nothing (it's a really safe city :/ ) but be nice to the firefighters :[ they're already only making 30K doing a pretty dangerous job. They don't even get to have the power trip cops do

update:

So I got to a CSU and I feel like my school is bending me over backwards and raping the hell out of me. But to look at the glass half full I consider myself lucky compared to many of my fellow classmates since I was at least able to enroll in ONE class! Sadly, many of my classmates weren't able to enroll or even WAIT LIST in a single freaking class. I just need three classes to graduate, and there are many of my peers in the same boat, but we can't now. We're not able to even focus on a minor or a certificate of some sort instead during this awful time because classes toward other subjects are already full as well! To give you guys some numbers - 1300 classes were canceled this year.

Imagine those students that planned on going to grad schools because they only had a few classes left and planned on graduating but now can't go and forced to stay an extra semester of two. Rumors have it that students are hiring lawyers, possibly suing the school/csu system.

Not good... I'd try to find out if you can take the 1 or 2 classes anywhere else.

I can't because I am a transfer student from a CC and I maxed out the total transferable units my school accepts.
