Monaco blue 2008 335i. Love this car. I'd love to trade up to a Cayman S, 911, or M5 one day, but it ain't good for your local rep with referring docs. You want to be the underdog as much as possible when you rely on the generosity of others for your patient base. Not many of the docs where I practice drive expensive (or just expensive looking) cars. It's probably a good thing I didn't spring for the M3. I may just go ahead with a stealthy application of the Dinan stage 3 mods though!

Looks just like the car which passed me on the autobahn going at least 150 mph this past weekend outside Trier. I was cruising around 100 mph and this guy screamed by me. Great looking car.

I'm lucky that I can buy gas on base at the US rate (currently $2.78/gal). The Germans are currently paying around $8.50/gal. A lot of that is road maintenance tax, as there are no toll booths on the autobahn.

Spot on, dude. My means have some catching up to do, in large part because of the wifey (the impending baby isn't helping matters either).

2007 Honda CR-V, btw. My grandpa sold it to me for a song when they were downsizing to just one car.

Great car for first kid and on a resident's budget.

We got a 2006 CR-V when my daughter was born. We were literally carrying around a car seat as we were test driving the cars. The winners for our budget were the RAV-4 and the CR-V, and looking back, I like the choice I made.

Now fast forward almost 4 years, and with a second kid, the CR-V is very cramped. Oh well, this car and my 2006 Accord will last throughout the rest of residency/fellowship. I just need to try to live closer to the hospital.

IMHO, stealth is best. Just like you said, you don't piss off the referral base or in my case, the employer.

But even better, when some expensive sports car pulls up next to you or tries to pass you and then all of a sudden out of nowhere you turn on the jets. Priceless.

I had an STI go past me on a back road the other day. I know he didn't even think twice about me in my Tundra with 35' tires. As he went through the turn he could see me falling behind. Then we hit the straight for a while and I was pulling him in. He got on it and couldn't drop me. we hit the next bnd in the road and I had to back off. Then I pulled him back and gained on him even faster than the first time. I would have loved to see his face WTF. He never could drop me but I was hitting my speed limiter so I couldn't pass him. Now he waves at me when we see each other.

I bought this http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...TAFSRCHUSDTEXT

old police car for $1500 in 1995. I had planned to drive it until the end of residency, but somebody gave us an '01 Taurus. Thus the autotrader link.

Completely agree with being stealthy. Working on restoring a '69 Mustang Grande with my dad. Straight hood (no scoop), but has a 390 and will easily bark tires at 75mph.

Does it have cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks, and no catalytic converter so it'll run good on regular gas? How about SCMODS?

Cop tires were too expensive and too soft (didn't last long enough). Had Eagle GT+4's when I got it, rolls on some not-so-high dollar Generals now.

Suspension is noticeably stiffer than the civilian model, and the sway bars make for very good handling.

Effectively has no catalytic converter - the thing needs exhaust from the headers back. It has always run like crap on anything but premium gas - not enough octane in the mid- or low-grade cheap stuff.

SCMODS - that must be the thing that keeps saying to "arrest driver and impound vehicle."

That's the ugliest thing I've seen.

Not necessarily my idea of stealth either. But hey, thats why the car companies make so many different cars, everyone has their own taste.

You know how a string of spaghetti whips back and forth as you slurp it up into your mouth? That is essentially what my wifes legs did as she was ejected through the window and landed, head first, on the pavement 26 feet away. According to her the worst part, aside from the pain I'd imagine, was when she came to...she saw the look of panic on my face and being fully imobilized on the backboard in the trauma room she could'nt get to be close to me. Granted, even though we were only 35 feet from the parking space she shouldn't have taken her belt off. But at that instant multiple airbags and saftey ratings moved up on my priority list. Those same factors became exponetially more important when we had children.

1999 Honda Civic LX
137,000 miles.
It's red, that makes it sporty.

I got it brand new when I was in college. Other than scheduled maintenance, it is bullet proof. I wish I had a reason to get rid of it, but it's paid for, cheap to run, and too reliable.

F that Dinan. Waste of money. Go for the juice box 3 and some other mods.
Oil cooler, intercooler, downpipes, exhaust, dual cone intake, etc.
Sleeeeeper.

I drive an '03 BMW 530i and its the love of my life. Am I the only one here who has a passion for cars?! We also have an '09 335d sitting in the garage for anyone to cruise in. That bad boy is sweet. 425lb of torque at 1800rpm!

My neighbor who is an anesthesiologist has an M5, Prius, big Ford truck all set up for off roading. I LOVE that M5.
Whats with people on here?! Time to drop some coin

your neighbor is probably the dude that's skimming off the top of all the new anesthesia grads. or, he's the dude that lives above his means and won't ever be able to retire. either way, he's living on borrowed money.

dude, unless your mom and day buy you an M5 you will NEVER be able to REASONABLY afford an M5 as an anesthesiologist (or any other 85k car) living anywhere close to a metro area. especially, not in the future.

after you're done with your rent/mortgage, food, disability/life, child/wife related expenses, a vacation or two, retirement/general savings on your future projected 250k/yr salary (read 150k/yr salary after taxes) - i would love to see you spend even 50k on a car (used M5).

What "referral base?" I've never referred a patient to an anesthesiologist in my life.

Even if you were in a referral-based field, trust me...not only do referring docs probably have no idea what you drive, they don't care, either.

If you want a 911, you should buy one.

You mean other than "call anesthesia for: Blood patch, Central line, intubation, A-line, Acute pain consult, epidural, help with LP, peripheral IV start, code call..." Not to mention every OR case. I have yet to meet a patient that wanted surgery without first being referred to an anesthesiologist.

So yo bro - what's your field?
Or let me browse few of your posts.....Don't tell me that you are a FP that KNOWS pain medicine and inject facets without fluoro....
Just to make a buck - otherwise is hard to make some cash for your your toys.
And I know that the FP -s and PCP-s (most of them) - KNOW EXACTLY WHAT CARS WE DRIVE.

Hey dude - "one of those"????
Do you sell viagra on internet? Or you have a private clinic for millionaires with hemorrhoids? Come on - tell us the secret!

Every time that guys comes here he gets scalded whether it is warranted or not. This may not have been warranted but I'm sure he got the message. Other specialties don't think of anesthesia as a specialty which requires a referral like a surgeon might require one.

Blue Dog, you may have been saying "who cares, buy what you want" and not meaning any harm but it was the lack of understanding that got you in this situation.

Let me spell this out for you. Every time a surgeon brings a pt to the OR they in effect refer their pt to the anesthesiologist for surgery.

For those of you who actually get individual referrals (as opposed to "call anesthesia"), the idea that your choice in car factors into anyone's referral decision is ridiculous.

Yes, buy what you want.

You have no idea when it comes to OR dynamics. There is a lot of jealousy going on there and it ain't coming from the anesthesiologists.

It's always the anesthesiologists and the radiologists who drive the nicest cars, just ask the surgeons.

BTW, whats all the deleted posts for. Were you being smart or just clueless?

Yes, buy what you want.
Let's say the Chief of Surgery drives a Toyota Camry. Let's say you pull up next to him in your Porsche 911 one morning. When your anesthesia group contract comes up for renewal, the Chief of Surgery who is on the committee, may think you make too much money. This may not be a good thing for your group. Especially, if you are wanting an increase in your salary. Worst case scenario, he may push for an alternate anesthesia group to come in (i.e., refer to someone else).

The point is, I wouldn't so easily dismiss this as ridiculous.

Where do you guys work that you have to worry about this? Our lot is full of C4S, M5s, Turbos, and AMGs and we work in an area with notoriously low reimbursements. A lot of our surgeons, cardiologists, GI docs, and anesthesia like nice cars. We talk about them in the lounge and like to go for drives when someone gets a new one. I drive a beater and spend my money on other things but it is fun when one of my friends gets a cool new car for me to check out.

If you are a fat-lonely-ugly f*ck, no one is going to care you drive a Porsche 911. It's not about the car. It's about rubbing your success in the face of people that determine your fate. That's the only point. Cars are just good examples of this behavior. Another example would be bragging about how much vacation you have, or bragging about when you're getting off today, etc.

SAT and ACT scores are posted in sig line. I used to think I was super cool for having my two 12 inch subs cranked obnoxiously loud in my car. Now I reflect back and just feel like a tool with less high frequency hearing.

My dream car. I have been lusting over these since Jr. High. 1997 LX450 (Land Cruiser). I've added a few things like a 3" lift, 35's, TRD supercharger, rock armor, home-brew roof rack etc. It's fun to take off road and to places like Moab. I do all the work myself so it's a relatively "cheap" hobby. Best of all, I paid for it with cash before med school. I love not having a car payment.

They day I bought it almost 4 years ago:

Nice taste Kaz. How do you like the SC'r? Is it a TRD charger or a Eaton?

Thanks Noyac. I love the SC. It made it into a totally new truck. The 80 series Land Cruiser 4.5L I6 is known for being extremely reliable (300K out of this motor is not uncommon) but slightly underpowered, especially if pulling a load or going up mountain grades. However with the SC it has 100 series V8 power and gets a 2-4 MPG better fuel economy if I'm easy on the skinny pedal. It's not a racecar but it moves well for a 5K lb rig with 35's on stock 4.11 gears. TRD outsources these S/C's to Magnuson which I believe is part of Eaton. I think the blower itself is an Eaton M90, it was relatively easy to install (piece by piece at night during my Cardio block last year).

hey all,

saw some other med students posting...and figured since i'm a Ms2 and *hopeful* future anesthesiologist as well... id thought i'd throw in my 2 cents.

this is what i'm currently rolling around in:

2008 montego blue 335i coupe...so far the only mods i've done is got rid of the runflat tires and added a dinan stage II chip - added the //M front bumper. Thinking of switching out to an 09' m3 coupe , depending on how my stocks do the next couple of months.

but on an anesthesia note, my father is an anesthesiologist and he has an 08' MB s550, and is on the waitlist for an R8 currently.

lets hear from some other docs with cool rides..there have to be docs out here with some pretty sick rides.

dude, unless your mom and day buy you an M5 you will NEVER be able to REASONABLY afford an M5 as an anesthesiologist (or any other 85k car) living anywhere close to a metro area. especially, not in the future.

after you're done with your rent/mortgage, food, disability/life, child/wife related expenses, a vacation or two, retirement/general savings on your future projected 250k/yr salary (read 150k/yr salary after taxes) - i would love to see you spend even 50k on a car (used M5).
Jeff,

I understand where you're coming from about living beyond your means...
but -

As far as skimming off the anesthesia grads, don't most docs do that to fresh grads in private practice before they can reach partnership? in any case, 250k seems awfully , awfully low. I guess in downtown chicago the upper 200's is the starting norm salary...but after 5 - 10 years in practice, that shouldn't be the case, right?

my pops has been on the fringe for a general anesthesia doc in northwest indiana, just about 35 miles from downtown chicago...and he's got nothing, zip, nada - for 325k/year plus benefits. Most people interviewing want 350.

I don't think its unreasonable at all to drive an 85k car if you're an established physician making 300k+ per year. especially with lease incentives in private practice, etc.

just my .02, but i'm just a med student, so maybe i'm off.
