Director Mazza made it a point at my interview to state that last year was a weird year and that they did anticipate taking more people off the waitlist this year. They do not expect a repeat of last year.

Default Interviewing

I was complete on 10/1. Are there still interviews being given out or is that a rejection by now?

well, you haven't been complete for all that long so this really shouldn't be an issue right now

So, I never received a complete email from JHU, but I did receive a receipt for my secondary during early September. I have emailed them twice to inquire about my status with no response (once 2 weeks ago and again last week). Any suggestions of what I should do? Did it take long for your status to be complete after your got the secondary receipt?

Maybe call the office and explain your situation. Two months seems like an awfully long time to not be complete yet.

Yeah, you may want to call them - my secondary was received 9/29 and I got the complete e-mail on 10/30

Hi all- just wanted to say congrats to those who have gotten in and good luck to the applicants. I am a first year student here and was in your shoes just a short time ago deciding whether or not I should come here (and wondering how I even got in). It goes without saying that your medical education depends much more on what you make of it than what school you go to. With that said, I'm usually not the personality type to pimp my school on people but here it goes since this is what everyone checks this thread for anyways:

For the doubters:

For those who need perfect classmates: many people here are great, but when was the last time you loved all 120 in your class? For a school in this league, classmates are great.

For those who worry about Baltimore: you never get to see the city outside your med school anyways so you will love it.

For those who worry it will be cutthroat: its pass no-pass and everyone is too preoccupied with becoming a physician to care about your grade. Think it through and that should dispel the rumors.

For everyone else: Medical school is totally worth what we put ourselves through to get here and when I applied I was just ecstatic to get in anywhere. Luck have it I got in here. One of our profs won the nobel prize a few weeks ago, I have guest lecturers that have 30+ honorary degrees, and I grab lunch at subway in the hospital that defined modern medicine. I love the fact that I am getting this kind of an education that so few can. Is it the best you can get? No one really knows but I think so.

Point being this place is great and I feel very blessed to be here learning from the greats. Come on- its Hopkins. Sorry to use the Yankees (suck it) but this is the Yankees of medicine. Also, I buy beer in baltimore for 50 cents a can. Come on folks- get with it.

Thanks so much for the post thheflin! I really loved Hopkins during my interview day and I'm still in disbelief at my acceptance. I do have a lot of doubt/fears about Hopkins but you definitely addressed a lot of my concerns in your post. Thanks again for your advice and I hope to potentially see you at Hopkins next Fall.

I've gotten the impression from other schools that this isn't always the case.

Are you saying JHU's students don't have a life outside of school?

from the students i spoke to...it didn't seem like that was the case. they may not go out as much as say...columbia, but it definitely seemed like the first years were going out once a week. it seems like if u were the type to go out during undergrad, u'll continue to do so. the pass/fail lets you take over your own time management. maybe a few actual students can opine?

OK that's good to hear. Funny you should mention Columbia, because that's exactly the other school I was talking about; students there seemed like they did have time to take advantage of the city.

I didn't drink or go out much in undergrad, but that was due to working a lot. I would like to mellow out a bit in med school and have some time to go out or at least relax. I've been pleasantly surprised that most top med schools definitely seem to allow for that. I'm hoping JHU is similar.

for some clarification, for the no "hard enters" mentioned on the app, does this mean all of our responses have to be essentially one paragraph and not separated?

Also, did anyone else have problems with leaving the "stop dates" blank for the ECs or Volunteer/Community Service section? Mine kept giving me an error when trying to save it.....and in my searching, there was no resolution for this besides putting in some tentative future date.

ah! rhetoric!! i love it!

i'm confused why you wouldn't "stand a chance" looking at your profile....there is a chance for anything. or were you just looking for a pick-me-up?

seriously

Coz I wonder if the school will still look at me seriously since I submitted it so late... you know, most of the applicants already went to their interviews. My delay was due to some stupid reason...

Of course. As long as you make the deadline, the school will still consider your application with the same seriousness it affords all applications. There are just less interview invites left to give out at this point, and likely a higher backlog of applications to seriously consider. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the wait. Seriously.

So i was complete here Sept. 30th and haven't really gotten any response. Anyone with a similar complete date and no response? Or is this probably a silent hold/rejection?

I was complete a month before you and also haven't heard back yet.

I'd like to think that they must have at least glanced at our applications during this long period of time and decided not to immediately send rejection letters. Still, I don't want to set myself up for disappointment.

I suspect that has to be true for you guys, but with someone just now getting their rejection letter after being complete Sept. 15, I think it's probably still pretty likely that I have one coming in the mail.

Still keeping hope alive!

Good luck to everyone expecting to hear back!

I have my interview next week. I was going over the Interview Feedback thread and someone posted about a Hopkins Shuttle. Did anyone take that from the train station to Reed Hall? Are we allowed to if we're not Hopkins faculty/staff/student? (Do they check ID?)

I took it without difficulty. I was in my suit, however, so that might have played in my favor.

I have my interview next week. I was going over the Interview Feedback thread and someone posted about a Hopkins Shuttle. Did anyone take that from the train station to Reed Hall? Are we allowed to if we're not Hopkins faculty/staff/student? (Do they check ID?)
I took it from the campus to the train station and had no problems except traffic. Wasn't in my suit either :-)

Question

Any last minute advice for a very soon-to-be interviewee?

A short time ago, I was given a very sage nugget of wisdom with regard to the medical school interview season. I was told to pay less attention to buildings and other facilities and spend more time looking at existing students on campus.

Hopkins is one place where you will have a lot of contact with current students during interview day. Make the most of it.

Do NOT miss the optional "Greeters" event the night before interviews. The Hopkins students were absolutely incredible. For people with such lofty credentials, it is absolutely amazing how laid back everyone is. The first year students really have a ton of info to share.

Also be sure to accept any offers you may receive to attend classes with the first year students on the morning of interview day. I couldn't get over how many students not involved in the Greeters program saw us in formal dress and came over to introduce themselves during the breaks.

You'll also get to spend some time with the fourth-year students later in the day--they also have some terrific perspective to provide.
