Default troubled about a loan in default

SDN Members don't see this ad.
I recently found out that one of my student loans that my mother was paying intrest on (principal was defered) went into default....She didnt even tell me she stopped paying inorder for me to take this over. The amount was for 12K I was shocked this has happened but now I have to devise a solution to minamize the damage.

I am troubled about this because I am a senior and applying to medical school in the spring.....Thursday I met with the admissions board to speak with them about even having a chance .....Gpa somewhat low 3.3 .... after an hour and fifteen minutes of talking with them about life in general and all other sorts (was in the army, helped with AIDS patients (father passed away when I was eight AIDS related illness) volunteered several places ect and currently a manager in sales working 40? hours.....

When I was leaving he told me if I post a MCAT score in the mid to high 20's with my life experiences he will personally take my application to the Dean of the medical school. Also told me that he will revise my personal statement and prep me for the interview. You can imagain my excitment and willingness to work extra hard to make it.....

When I found about this loan last night in default I was lost ........Is this going to have an impact ingetting into medical school? will I not be able to go now? I was planning on taking the HPSP scholarship to get it paid for .

any help, comments, or concerns would be extremely appreciated

thanks

I don't see how that would affect your ability to get admitted to medical school. It may, however, affect your ability to borrow more student loans. I would contact the lender or your financial aid office to figure out what to do to to make your defaulted loan current again.

You probably won't be eligible for grad plus or private loans but if you do the military it doesn't matter. As for admissions, it won't play any role. As for why you defaulted in the first place you have to take an active role in paying loans in your name. It is imperative that you protect your credit for future purchases.
