Default Ohio Schools: Switching OOS to IS

SDN Members don't see this ad.
So I know like 90% of OOS can be come IS @ Toledo, OSU, Cinci, etc. But one thing I didn't realize is that you have to be 100% financially indepedant unless it comes from an Ohio source...hmmm

So basically the plan was I was going to pay tution, while parents paid for living expensives etc. Wouldn't this disqualify me from ever getting IS tuition? Damn...everything has to have fine print lol

call the school thats your best bet...but i would think how could they prove your parents are paying and you are not independant. As long as your parents dont claim you as a dependant on their taxes you are basically independant for all intensive purposes. Or if you are married or have a kid, whcih i assume you dont.

Yeah exactly...another idea I just got is if I get accepted there, have my parents set up a 1 year savings account in my name. This way, all their financial support would be given to me 12 months before residency, which according to the state IS legal.

ex) have parents set up $80,000 savings account in my name July 2010. By July 2011, when I claim residency, I will have been 1 year without any parental aid, yet I still have 80k.

Seriously??? Your parents are coughing up $80k for you in GRAD SCHOOL? That's no small change...

They are paying my living expense. It is likely I will have 60-70k total a year (living+tuition)...they don't want me 300k in debt. I am paying 100% tuition.

I don't think I'm so bad when tons of people on here have their patents pay 100% of cost of attendance, which can often be 250-300k

I guess-just realize how INCREDIBLY lucky you are and that there are probably way more people than those two groups combined (with full/partial parental support) paying for it all on their own. Everyone has to grow up and become financially independent at some point!

I do realize how extremely lucky I am- trust me. I do not take my parents money for granted one bit. In fact, I tried to tell them not to help me because I want their retirement/well being to be first and foremost. My dad wouldn't take no for an answer and claimed he saved up for this...oh well.

Just FYI though- I've paid my for almost all of my undergrad MYSELF through scholarships and working. So my dad said since I saved him so much money putting myself through undergrad this is his present back to me. Still, I am very grateful and even feel guilty receiving help.

Anyways- does anyone else know about this OOS --> IS thing?

You do realize that basically what you are doing is trying to defraud the tax payers of Ohio by doing something that will allow you to beat the system right???? The laws are specific about what needs to happen for you to get in state tuition. If you don't qualify but have the means to get a ridiculously huge lump sum deposited into an account for you by your parents, it still i fraud and I'm sure someone from that school won't be so happy with your SMART plans to beat the system.

When I interviewed at OSU they told us we could change residency and get lower tuition--it was one of their selling points during the presentation.

That is contingent on you not getting support from your parents because then you would not qualify for instate tuition. Read the previous posts. Even the original poster realizes this.

Fair point--I didn't read the thread closely enough.

Calm the **** down...Jesus.

You have no ****ing right to accuse me of fraud...I made this thread because I found the residency form vague at best.

It CLEARLY states you cannot receive financial support 12 months prior to switching. It is therefore within the law to receive financial support 13 months before...IF IT WERE ILLEGAL IT WOULD BE STATED.

If this is illegal, I sure as hell won't do it. Maybe that's why I made this thread to get help and not get harassed by people like you?

Incorrect. It states support while you are in medical school is not allowed.
