Yes, that was a depressing read. . . . Yes, I'm sure a top 25 ranking helps if one wants to be an academic. However, I think a better indictor of one's ability to enter an academic career after receiving a doctorate would be to find out what percentage of the program's students end up in academia. And, if working at a tier 1 research university is important to you, find out how many alums are working in them. |

For the PhD Counseling program at UFL, I had a preliminary phone interview last week. This evening my POI invited me to an on-campus interview for March 1st.

Me too! Its frustrating. No one ever talks about that school. I posted a thread a few months ago asking why there was literally no information about it on this site (no exaggeration, i checked). Quick question to those who applied there: did you get any kind of confirmation email that your materials had been received? |

Rejected from Yale - expected this - yet 10,400 applicants they say? Seriously!?! That $100 application fee sure adds up!!

Okay, so I had an interview this past Thursday. Today, I heard from two of my fellow invitees - one got an offer, the other a waitlist. Both via phone, both from the DCT.
Meanwhile, my phone was silent. What do we make of this? Definite no? Bummed. |

i think e-mailing is a great idea. i e-mailed my poi at one school today only to find out my application had somehow slipped through the pile and now I'm doing a phone interview with my poi tomorrow. definitely worth at least e-mailing. i also would not call. it seems to put them on the spot. at least with an e-mail, they can ignore you lol
what a horrible process my friends |

Is anyone else finding that a large amount of their POIs ended up not taking students? At 4/10 of my schools, my POI strongly encouraged me to apply and then ended up not taking a student! I guess they must have felt there was a chance at the time and am not asserting that they lied to me, but it's just annoying... That's about $500 on a grad student budget (I'm currently in a masters program) down the drain that could have been prevented!
I know that's just how this process works, but I just needed to vent for a min. |

Re: Duquesne -- to confirm my application was complete I corresponded via phone and several emails. I found their assistance very generous.

Could someone PM me an email template they used to inquire about the status of the application. I don't know how to word it so it sounds like a polite inquire rather than an accusation. |

Has anyone heard anything from Nova's PhD program? I understand some PsyD applicants have received interview invites, but I haven't heard anything about the PhDs.
Also, I remember reading in a post that some of the members here are current Nova students. If any of you have time to share a little info, it would be much appreciated! Thanks! |

Would those of you who have gotten interviews mind letting me know if you are coming straight from undergrad? I am, and I haven't heard back from anyone yet. I have heard that they don't like to take people right from undergrad and this seems to be the case. My qualifications are very good, but maybe not in comparison to those who have more academic/research experience out of undergrad. Thoughts??

While I'm not coming straight from undergrad at each one of the interviews I've been on so far there has been someone who is.
Good luck! Quote:

Those stats typically just indicate if the incoming class has bachelors vs masters degrees. I think increasingly the "norm" is for individuals to take a few years and work as an RA before being admitted. At least this is typically the case for PhD programs, although I know that there are rare exceptions where individuals will be admitted right from undergrad.

I think I would be wary of this - not having a master's doesn't indicate coming straight from undergrad

Yes, most of the graduate students come into the program with a BA and not a Master's, but this does not mean that those with a BA didn't take time off before they applied. I know many people who applied right out of undergraduate and got in, but many professors prefer students who have taken time off to do research full time. There is not a general rule about it one way or the other, it is just whatever that professor's preferences are. Of course, if you want to play it safe, it is better to take time off. |

Regarding Duquesne, the university was closed yesterday and today (Tuesday) because of the snow storm. Hopefully this helps (if only a little) with the waiting and anxiety.... |

I'm coming straight from undergrad and so far I've had 3 interview invites. I did, however, stay in school for 5 years instead of 4, and that gave me another year's research experience and the chance to do my own undergrad thesis. From what I understand, it is POSSIBLE but tough to go straight from undergrad into a PhD program. Best of luck!

Just some info -
I emailed my POI at a school I was pretty sure I'd get an invite to, but didn't, and he said he'd intended to invite me but the secretary made a mistake. I now have an invite to their interview day! So, can't hurt. |

i got 3 out of 10 interviews and i'm straight from undergrad. if i actually get in anywhere...that's a whole different question. i had about a year of clinical experience, 3 years research and above average gre's and gpa but i'm sure it's probably the same for you :/ may just be the programs you applied to? |

I emailed all my POIs at schools I did not receive invites for (but no rejections yet). I just asked quickly and politely if all invites were out. they all pretty much confirmed that I would not be receiving one, but I did get some good feedback. including being told that I was on the original shortlist but due to funding, the number of students accepted was to be cut in half. these were all people I had been in touch with previously. But they did not seem to mind my email and got back to me quickly and kindly. |

Hey,
I was wondering if the following schools are still sending invites: U Washington (adult) USC U of Illinois-Chicago UT-Austin USF University of Miami Also, has anyone heard from McGill University in Montreal? Are most schools sending rejections via email or USPS? Is no news good news? Thanks |

The basic fact is it's possible to get in right out of undergrad, but you're much more competitive after a few years out getting experience. Plus, this experience combined with being older & more mature will help you write personal statments and interview better. Case in point, I applied right out of undergrad and got 2 interviews, waitlisted at both, then rejected. This year I got 7 interviews...so yeah.
