I am getting a lot of PMs about this "6-week program"...

Since I wasn't sure what everyone's science background is, I stretched it out to 8 weeks.... However you can EASILY convert the first 4 weeks into just 2 if you have a strong science background.

I am going to post the entire study guide here on this thread, I'll post it over 8 posts (1 post per each week).... There are 2 versions, both are very good and will get the job done if you put in your time. Start with 1 version and STICK to it, don't flip flop around, either do the KBB or the CHADS, and its not necessary to do both once your done with one.

Word of advice, the first 4 weeks are pretty harsh. Your looking at 8-12 hours of studying a day.... Again you DON'T HAVE TO FOLLOW THIS, but its there for you if you need it

I came up with this guide from reading the MCAT 10-week home-study program created by exam krackers, I liked it a lot and wanted to implement it for the DAT on a 8-week program

This is based on the following resources:
-Kaplan blue book (KBB) (2009-2010 version)
-Cliff’s AP biology (3rd edition from 2007)
-DAT destroyer (2010 version)
-MATH destroyer (2010 version ~ I believe it has 11 tests)
-Crack DAT PAT software (the 10 test version)
-Chads chemistry and math videos (Optional)

Please understand that this is JUST A GUIDELINE, no one has to follow it 100%, there is no guarantee that you will score a high or low score by following it. Its mostly designed for those new folks around SDN who don’t really know how or where to start studying for the DAT. This is my strategy, and I believe it will serve many.

Okay, You have just completed the entire science review, math, and PAT review of the entire DAT in 4 weeks. Take the next 2 days off, you deserve it.

Before going further, from this point forward, your going to be mostly working on problem solving, whenever you come across a problem (ESPECIALLY IN THE SCIENCES), make sure you understand it 100%. Understand why every answer is correct / not correct, don’t let anything pass by you. Use your review books, come to SDN on the DAT forums and ask questions, just make sure you understand all the problems from this point forward.

You will be spreading the destroyer problems over a 2 week period. The new 2010 destroyer has 232 orgo, 242 GC, and 377 biology questions. I will divide them such that over the next 2 weeks, you will go over the ENTIRE destroyer 2x times. Each day you will do 22 orgo problems, 23 GC problems, and 36 biology problems

Thursday: Do the following DAT destroyer problems:
Orgo 1 – 22
GC 1 – 23
Biology 1 – 36

Do CRACK DAT PAT test #1. When your done with your test DON’T DO ANYTHING ELSE, store your results and DON’T LOOK AT YOUR MISTAKES. Exit the software

Do MATH destroyer test #1. I am going to suggest for you to not time your self. First learn to do things right, then work on your speed. Do these tests, mark your answers on a separate sheet (but not on the exam itself cause your going to do each exam multiple times). When your done taking test #1, go over EVERY problem you got right and wrong. You should learn MATH destroyer really well cause about 80% of those problems simply reappear on the real DAT

Friday: Do the following DAT destroyer problems:
Orgo 23 - 45
GC 24 - 47
Biology 37 – 73

Do MATH destroyer test #2. Same way as before, don’t time yourself, after your done with the test, go over each problem and learn from mistakes

Saturday: Do the following DAT destroyer problems:
Orgo 46 - 68
GC 48 - 71
Biology 74 - 110

Do MATH destroyer test #3. Same way as before, don’t time yourself, after your done with the test, go over each problem and learn from mistakes

Sunday: Do the following DAT destroyer problems:
Orgo 69 - 91
GC 72 - 95
Biology 111 - 147

Do MATH destroyer test #4. Same way as before, don’t time yourself, after your done with the test, go over each problem and learn from mistakes

Week8: (final week)
Monday: Do the following DAT destroyer problems:
Orgo 184 - 206
GC 192 - 215
Biology 296 - 332

Go back over MATH destroyer and this time, do test #8 and give yourself only 45 minutes to do it. When time is up, go over all the problems you got wrong and all the ones you didn’t have time to get to.

Tuesday: Review all the mistakes you’ve made on CRACK DAT PAT software test#5

Do the following DAT destroyer problems:
Orgo 207 – 232
GC 216 - 242
Biology 332 – 377
You’ve just completed DAT destroyer for the 2nd time

Go back over MATH destroyer and this time, do test #9 and give yourself only 45 minutes to do it. When time is up, go over all the problems you got wrong and all the ones you didn’t have time to get to.

Now you have from Wednesday till Sunday to do whatever you feel like. I suggest you continue working with MATH destroyer and doing more CRACK DAT PAT tests (you have 5 more to do)….. Also, some folks (including me) found topscore software to be pretty helpful before the DAT. I suggest you do it during this time.

Week9: (take-the-test week)
You take the test in this week and come back and post your results

A few things I've been asked about this:
"why do you wait 3-4 days between PAT tests?"
Well, here is a thread I posted about PAT, I tried to follow the same method. Again, if you don't like it, you don't have to do it. Here is the link: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=675995

As far as the actual study guide goes. Its 8 weeks, 4 spent on reviewing and 4 spent on applying everything you reviewed to problem solving. Like Crew09 suggested to me, everyone comes from different backgrounds so the initial 4 weeks can be modified to however way you see fit. For example if you come from a very strong biology background, then your not going to need to read each of the biology chapters from both Cliff's AP and KBB 2x times, 1 time would be enough. Sometimes you might have weakness in all 3 areas (biology, chemistry, and orgo) but there are certain chapters that you feel your very strong with, so you don't have to do the 2-time reading strategies for those chapters... you see what I mean?

Also, some folks have suggested some nice additional comments to how its possible to modify the 8-week schedule, here they are:

If anyone has any additional suggestions to what things that could be modified, or things you've tried and worked out before, please come back here and post it. Also for those of you who use other products like Crack DAT MATH & Science, Chad's videos, and whatnot, lets hear how you could incorporate them into this study guide.... I couldn't include those other resources cause I never used them.

unfortunately guys, there isn't much I can add in regards to the kaplan stuff. I don't know much about what the kaplan course provides, so I just don't know what/how to incorporate their system into this guide.

I hope you guys can figure it out and post back your updated system.

I will say one thing, there is a chance that I will get access to chad's chemistry videos to examine their content, if/when I do, I'll post back an updated guide that will incorporate chad's videos.

Definitely would like to see an updated version with Chad's Video (and possibly DAT Achiever as well as TopScore)?

This training looks pretty good.

I don't know if I'm missing something... but why is there no time allotted to take actual practice tests? I feel like this is essential in the preparation. When would you suggest to take practice tests and how many?

I do agree that I didn't allocate the proper time / schedule for taking the practice tests, but its kinda there on post #9 under Week #8:

"Now you have from Wednesday till Sunday to do whatever you feel like. I suggest you continue working with MATH destroyer and doing more CRACK DAT PAT tests (you have 5 more to do)….. Also, some folks (including me) found topscore software to be pretty helpful before the DAT. I suggest you do it during this time."

I guess the real reason why I didn't specify topscore or archiver or whatever is out there is because I didn't exactly follow those tests when I did my preparation. You see, I only did 1 practice test (it was one from barron's CD), I think I scored like an AA 17, it was really demoralizing and I just didn't wanna take more practice tests lol. I did topscore sciences, but not as a test, but like practice problems, didn't time myself or anything, I just wanted to learn from the problems.

Obviously, I am not recommending you do this, many people around SDN who has scored very high are the ones who practiced the most with practice tests.

Hey!!

This actually does sound like a great study schedule. I have one question...what modifications (if any) would you suggest to someone like myself who is working a full-time job? I plan on taking the DAT in September.

Once again, thank you for this post!!

hmm, this is kinda hard to answer, I wasn't working when I studied so I just don't have the experience to answer your question. You obviously woun't be able to keep up with this schedule, and I don't even advice you to try as you'd be over working your brain.

Im sure you'll find something that works out for ya, good luck

My DAT score is right under my signature look at post #1 at bottom

As far as practice exams go, read post #19 above, I kinda talked about it there

Thumbs up Great Motivation

This schedule is great! I started this schedule the last week of May. Since I have other obligations such as a job & thesis research. I expanded the 8 week schedule into 14 weeks. I wake up every morning at six a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and I've seen the benefits so far (I give myself a day off.) The repetition is very helpful. Thank you!

Hey Dentalworks,

According to what you wrote, Kaplan blue book (KBB) (2009-2010 version) wouldn't that be this book: http://www.amazon.com/Kaplan-2009-20...7350369&sr=8-2

I hope it's the ISBN you wrote above, because that is a heck of a lot cheaper.

Anyways thanks! Just want to get the best for my money

I can't give any suggestions for RC as I never mastered it. I did end up with a 19 on it (by luck I think). The few practice RC passages I did, I was always scoring between 14-16

This really has been such a GREAT outline to follow- Im taking the DAT AUG 9th, and I followed this pretty much exactly. I also bought Achiever- and did all 6 tests too. I will post my scores soon, but I just wanted to thank you really for putting this outline up here- for all of us who have trouble making a plan!

THANKSS!!

Any tweaking suggestions for the Canadian DAT? There is no Ochem or QR Section but there is Carving on the bars of soap. I'm unsure of how much time to donate to the carving. Maybe eliminate the QR and Ochem and replace with 1 or 2 bars of soap carving each week?

This a great outline and I followed it pretty closely but compressed the first four weeks into two by doubling the readings and review. Mixing in Chad's videos in those first two weeks was also helpful for me. Thanks for the great study outline

I finally got to this. I am sorry it took me 3+ months to get it done. Due to the numerous PM's I got regarding how to modify the study plan to include chad's chemistry vids, I have made a version of this study plan that uses those videos. You can download either study plan from here.

Great plan for those with not a lot of time.

For those that do, I would recommend Anki. Definitely helps with Bio facts as well as OC rxns and GC concepts.

I'd like to post my opinion of this study plan as I tried to stick to it during the course of my studies. I thought it was excellent in keeping me on track during the first four weeks, getting all my information in order...now what I'd recommend changing

Taking the majority of Kaplan out of it...it's just not needed, and I feel dumb having spent money on the book EXCEPT for the Wittig reaction, but sadly that's it.

Also, only reading each chapter twice is a big handicap..sure some only need to be looked at twice...but the sections that your bio professor didn't cover so well during undergrad bio need to be read over and over to do well.

Integrating Chad's videos into your study curriculum is essential to doing well in the Chemistry's I believe.

Besides that, I'm extremely glad I found this study plan because it will really keep you on track, and if you fall behind you'll feel bad about yourself, and you'll bust your tail even more to kill the DAT.

Default concern

"[QUOTE=dentalWorks;9543817]I am getting a lot of PMs about this "6-week program"..."

Thanks so much! I appreciate the detail and organization. However, do you have any alternatives to purchasing the Crack the DAT, PAT, & MATH for those who are limited on finances????

Thanks,

There is simply nothing better out there than CrackDATPAT. I mean if your one of these people who are naturally touching 19-20s on the PAT when you do your topscore tests, then you probably don't need the CrackDATPAT software..... Other wise, it is my opinion that the software is a MUST

As far as math goes. Same problem, there aren't that many resources out there that simulate the type of exam questions you will get on the real test. Some people like CrackDATMATH (software), I never used it because I absolutely loved how good Destroyer MATH is. I didn't believe I needed anything else. Again, if your naturally scoring well on the QR when you do your topscore tests, then I guess you really don't need any math resource. Other wise, Destroyer MATH is a must

I understand your finances are limited. But TRUST ME, not buying the good resources and scoring well on the DAT will cost you SOOO MUCH MORE. If you apply to dental schools with mediocre results on the QR and/or PAT, it can potentially hurt your chances of getting in. You don't wanna put your self in a position when you have to apply again next cycle. The application process is VERY expensive.

Good luck to you

Default thanks

thanks so much!! I shifted some things around and made the materials happen. I know how important it is to invest in the right materials. Thanks so much for your outline! You can not imagine how long I have studied aimlessly trying to figure-it out for myself. I just hate that I wasnt introduced to this website months ago... Nevertheless, I have 6 weeks and I am not wasting time. I am determined to do what is necessary. No, I am not the one that is getting those scores in these areas. So, I believe what you are saying... I will not be cheap now, and have to suffer that stress later. Its all about how much you want it!! AND I want it... thanks so much... God Bless you...

Thanks

Is the Kaplan Blue book the same thing as the Kaplan Review Notes book that we get when we take the Kaplan DAT course?

Yes. The main difference between the white and blue books is.... the white book has review questions (with answers) after each chapter. The blue book doesn't have this.

I thought the end of chapter questions of the white book (ESPECIALLY for the general chemistry section) were great.

hmmm when you mention the PAT part in the kaplan Bb i noticed that the white book doesnt have that section in there...were you referring to the PAT section in the kaplan LECTURE book instead?

and for chads videos was the $20 for the whole section or per video?

Oh thats right..... The white book does not have a PAT section. It does however have a "better" reading section. In the blue book, they only give you 3 reading passages, with the white book, you get the same 3 passages, and an additional 6.

As far as the chads go, its $20 for a 1 year subscription... I dunno if the prices have changed
