Here's my best guess:

1. Not getting into a residency. (likely the major one)
2. (for the chiros) Becoming a chiropractor in a town that values evidence-based medicine.
3. Poor budgeting.

121 defaulters out of tens of thousands of MDs in the U.S is insignificant. No cause for alarm. Wherever there are loans, there will be defaulters. Thats just the way it goes.

I never really understand what methods are used to move threads on SDN. This has to do with medical students too. They move a thread like this, yet leave all these ''Boyfriend girlfriend" threads littering the whole place.
