As a prelim IM intern I was denied renewal of contract and promotion based on deficiencies in professionalism and communication. My contract ends 6/30/12. The reason for denial of promotion to R2 level has changed several times the last was because several positive letters of support came from my patients as they realized I was not going to continue care. All the residents also wrote and signed a letter of petition to PD on my behalf. A letter also came from a U.S Rep on my behalf. Professional mis-conduct was coined based on 'soliciting for advocate'. I didn't solicit for letters of support. I was told no position for me by late march after the 'match', and its been difficult finding a spot. Please advise as I'm going through appeal process with hearing date to be announced soon. Anyone with similar experiences? Thanks for your responses. Last edited by Nwachinemelu1; 06-30-2012 at 11:13 PM. |

Dermpath is right, you are not guaranteed a PGY2 after a pre lim year

That's going to be a big problem in finding a PGY-2 spot (both at your current program or at a new one). Not having your contract renewed because of "professionalism" concerns is a big red flag - and your current program director will be contacted by any future potential employers. Have you addressed your program's concerns? Do you know where you made mistakes?

This is tough, as a prelim, your not guarantied any future spot. You suppose to apply for PGY2 positions...I take it you have been doing that. Going into an appeal is probably not going to get you anywhere..bc there is no commitment to continue you. I would rather work with the PD to get a good and clean LOR, and use that to apply for PGY2 spots. By going threw the appeal and fighting it, you may not get a positive response from your PD when you apply to other programs,,,,,,and that can be detrimental.
I am assuming that you have will get a certificate of completion of PGY1, you must have good LORs, now work on getting that clean and good LOR from the PD. You apply for advanced positions, and the reason you did not stay with your old program is because there were no positions available. Thats what your going to sell when you apply to other programs...simple as that. Before you go any further, I advise that you discuss your strategy with a lawyer. PS. If you are connected with a US rep, I am sure your probably connected in other ways, and wont have a problem finding a PGY2 spot. |

What in the world are you appealing????? As others have stated, you were a PRELIM. There is absolutely no obligation of any program to make you a categorical after a PRELIM year. Almost all prelims know this, and you should have too. As a matter of fact, most prelims make plans for their PGY 2 way before March since they know they are only expected to be at the program for one year. In addition, you have been cited for problems with "professionalism". If I were you, then I would want to drop ties with this program and just move on and start somewhere fresh. |
