"The grandfather period for eligibility to take the American Board of Medical Specialties Sports Medicine subspecialty certification via the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR) has been extended to 2013! After this time, only physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited sports medicine fellowship will be able to sit for the sports medicine boards." The ACGME-accredited PM&R sports programs currently are: Mayo, Washington University (St. Louis), Med College of Wisconsin, U of Washington (Seattle), Stanford, Utah, U of Illinois, Emory, U of Puerto Rico, RIC, Harvard/Spaulding, and UC Davis. In addition, the accredited PM&R sports fellowship programs will now be utilizing the NRMP match system, along with the FM based sports programs.

I'm not sure how to interpret that. Does that mean that Family Medicine based Sports Medicine Fellowships that were not previously open to PM&R residents, will now be open to PM&R docs?

FM-based Sports Medicine fellowships are (have been?) "open" to PM&R residents. As is always the case, some programs are more open than others.

I have looked at a number of sports med fellowship program listings to see what types of applicants they accepted in terms of residency training, and I got far fewer openly declaring they would take PM&R trained residents. I forgot the source website of the information at this point, but it may have been something off of AAPM&R. Is there a list on SDN, or elsewhere, where I could find more information regarding such programs and their habits of taking PM&R docs? Last edited by DrMattOglesby; 04-09-2011 at 02:11 PM. |

The best website for inquiring into the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowships is amssm.org (The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine). From there, you can see all of the fellowships...here is the link:
http://www.amssm.org/FellowshipsPositions.html The fellowship list is pretty up to date with a few exceptions (ie Johns Hopkins does not have a fellowship currently)...every year there is a little bit of change. In terms of which PCSM fellowships are "PM&R friendly" you have to do the legwork and call. Bottom line, a decent percentage will consider you if you are a competitive applicant. Also, remember that the Accredited PM&R sports medicine fellowships will now be going through the Match with the PCSM fellowships starting with the 2011-2012 application year (ie the fellowship class of 2013). |

For DO applicants, you may also be eligible for AOASM (American Osteopathic Association of Sports Medicine) fellowships. They too are largely primary care based but I have talked with some directors that have had and are still open to PM&R residents.

I also noticed in the above MSK council newsletter that the spinal injection cadaver workshops are now going to be sponsored by ISIS.
Great idea, whoever thought of this. ISIS has always been a more PM&R oriented organization (i.e. focused on neuromusculoskeletal anatomy as opposed to the more questional procedures or opiates) compared to other pain and interventional professional societies. They have a series of cadaver courses, very basic to highly advanced. With further collaboration, maybe ISIS Guidelines could be officially adopted as standard curriculum for PM&R MSK/Interventional Spine fellowships or residency programs. |

Yes - ISIS and AAPM&R will be collaborating on these courses. AAPM&R members will have access to all the ISIS courses and they are talking about allowing AAPM&R members to get earlier access to the spinal injection course as a pilot.
disciple, I owe you a pm. it's been hectic. sorry |
