Anything with lactose in it give me sharp, stabbing pains all through my abdomen and they last for up to three days sometimes. Needless to say, I avoid dairy for that reason.

Thank goodness most hard cheeses have no or little lactose, because that's one thing I don't think I could give up!
Cowgirla,

My mom is very lactose intolerant and she has no problems with sheep and goat milk whatsoever. Both have lactose but for whatever reason it doesn't seem to affect her. Also she can drink lactose-free cow's milk (like Lactaid) with no problems. Yogurt also is no problem.

It's probably close to impossible for you to obtain sheep or goat milk but if you haven't tried the lactose free milk you might want to look into it. It is way cheaper than the vegetarian alternatives and works like real milk in foods like macaroni and cheese. You can buy it at WalMart and Meijer and other grocery chains.

It would be fascinating to do an in-depth study on the differences between different species' milks and why some sit better with some people than others. I've never heard of anyone being allergic to sheep's milk. My brother can't tolerate casein and the sheep milk works for him but not the goat milk. Our doctor doesn't get it at all...

Nice to know that there are other allergic people out there on SDN...any gluten-free?

Ive tried the lactaid and I'm not a fan. Much prefer the coconut milk. I've even tried the lactase drops that digest the lactose in regular milk, and it just gives it a gross sickly sweet taste. And yeah, don't think I'm finding sheep or goats milk anywhere around here (at least not in my price range.) I really love coconut milk and don't feel like I'm missing anything. I don't like mac and cheese out of the box, so dont need milk for that. Dont make pudding or other things that require milk enzymes to set very often either. They make coconut ice cream for when I have a major ice cream craving, but even that's rare. I've pretty much lost my taste for it.

Some yogurts bother me more than others. I can eat any cheese in moderation without a problem, although really cheesy meals will sometimes get to me if it's a soft cheese. (I can munch on swiss/gruyere and things like that all day long, luckily). Even goat cheese bothers me if I eat too much of it, so I wonder if goat milk would work or not.

Dictionary.com:
Quote:
milk   [milk]
1. an opaque white or bluish-white liquid secreted by the mammary glands of female mammals, serving for the nourishment of their young.
2. this liquid as secreted by cows, goats, or certain other animals and used by humans for food or as a source of butter, cheeses, yogurt, etc.
3. any liquid resembling this, as the liquid within a coconut, the juice or sap of certain plants, or various pharmaceutical preparations.
I am not a vegetarian and absolutely love plant-substitute milks - mainly because I don't like the fatty taste of most animal milks. I also try and minimize the animal products in my diet, so it's an easy substitute.

As I said, people like different things. Just because they like different things from you doesn't mean you need to talk about their likes in a degrading tone.

I've never liked milk. It just leaves a weird film in my mouth, I feel like it's really heavy and just ferments in my tummy, and now that I'm older I don't do a great job digesting it anymore.

And actually, one of my biology profs pointed out to us that at a certain age, adult humans tend to stop making lactase at sufficient enough quantities to digest regularly consumed milk. It's just that, since it's such a staple in American culture, most adults desensitize themselves to the symptoms of lactose intolerance (or sensitivity, whichever word makes you more comfortable ) - bloating, flatulence, indigestion, lethargy, etc.

I don't know how applicable that is across the board, but it makes a ton of sense to me. =)

I think in general internet forums are delicate places to bring up topics and speak your mind as the meaning of your words cannot be determined by inflection and your facial expressions, and also your readers do not know you.
Yes, there was a nicer way to say it. However, there was no need to say it at all.

It can be very difficult to communicate effectively in only text, but there are ways to make your meaning and tone very clear to understand. Use emoticons. Write like you're speaking, not like you're writing a high school paper. Use common sense.

I was a vegetarian for 7+ years because I watched a PETA video and liked wet calf noses.

Then I went to college and smelled bacon. That was the end of that.

I didn't sit in a room for brunch every Saturday & Sunday filled with the smell of bacon. My family eats it maybe once a year. Health food ftw.

My college had chefs, not cooks.

I would argue that:

Sleeping in
Feeling accomplished
Having the guy/gal you like kiss you
Cuddles
Popcorn at the movies
Baby animals
Skittles

are the best things ever.
I don't need no bacon.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. Maybe it would be better to say that bacon>>>>vegetables.

Pretty darn close.

The only veggie that comes close would be fried potatoes... or french fries. Omg chips. OMG SWEET POTATO FRIES.

Sweet Potato Fries with Curry Mayo > bacon
(just by a little bit)

I'd rather have all those things and bacon. Except the Skittles. You can keep those.

I was about to say the same. All of those things (but skittles) would be better with bacon. Goes and buys the hubby bacon flavored lip balm

Doesn't seem to apply here yet. I have a much harder time making it through the day without a nice glass of milk in the morning. My breakfast only lasts about 2 (maybe 3) hours otherwise. But I can understand if people don't tolerate it well.

MMMM...bacon!
