Default I failed all my classes the first semester, what can I expect?

When I transferred to a four year university from community college I came with about a 3.5 gpa and in the first semester I had a hard time and failed all the classes I took. That is, I took 13 credits and my gpa that semester was a 0.6923.

The next semester I got a 3.875 gpa.

Over the course of the next two years I retook the four classes I failed and got 2 3.5s and 2 4.0s.

AAMC requires me to put in those old gpas.

My cumulative gpa with the bad grades is a 3.43, without is 3.65.
My science gpa with the bad grades is a 3.54, without is a 3.71.

Can I still get into MD or DO school?

For more grade info:

I graduated with a business degree in fall 2010 with a 3.60 cumulative and a 3.88 major gpa. (The failed grades weren't counted here -- only the retaken grade scores).

Immediately after I got my degree I started on the premed track just taking science classes.

My post degree gpa has been a 3.76. I have 4.0d the last two semesters (out of three full ones).

Based on these numbers what are your thoughts? I haven't taken the mcat yet (probably won't until I know I'm ready for sure).

Thank you so much for your thoughts,

Mike

I would contact your dean and ask for a retroactive withdrawal for that semester. That way that entire semester will switch from E's to W's.

Are the cumulative and science GPAs above with or without your post bac? MCAT score will determine your actual chances, but as it stands, if the GPAs listed are with the post bac, MD is possible, though a longish shot, and DO has a very good chance, assuming you perform well on the MCAT. Do what was already suggested, and go as far as you can in trying to change those Fs into Ws.

serenade:

thanks for the reply. As soon as I read your comment I made an appointment with my advisor. I'll be talking to him tomorrow morning.

theseeker4:

thanks for the reply. the cumulative and science gpas are including post-bac.

I'll be posting an update here if I am able to get the change done.

thanks again!

I talked to two advisors today.

They told me that I would need some "catastrophic event" to get it done.

I didn't necessarily have one. Really it was the transition to the four year that got to me.

They told me that because it happened about 5 years ago and it was my first semester and I have done such a good job it won't hurt me that much.

But what I am worried about is if some medical schools have gpa cutoffs... Depending on where I plan to apply, when that time comes, I may turn myself into the squeaky wheel and hope to get the change done. Other than that I could be screwed if there is a cutoff.

Any other thoughts are welcome.

Thanks again

Your record shows that the bad semester was an anomaly, and thus I think your chances are excellent, and if you do well on the MCAT, you'll have many interviews.
