1) As a premed (I will begin med school in August), does anyone know what responsibilities will be given to me when I volunteer at the free health clinic? I read on SDN that a student took the blood pressure of patients and even helped suture, and she had only completed her first year of medical school by then. 2) I know that people recommend not drinking the water in Mexico because it may lead to diarrhea or other GI problems. Someone also recommended not eating any fresh fruits or vegetables. Does anyone else have other recommendations in order to keep healthy and safe while in Mexico? Thanks in advance! |

I'll be attending UIC (Chicago campus) this fall, and I'm also very interested in working w/ Spanish-speaking pop's. Looks like I'm a bit late for the UAG program- I'm actually going to Spain this summer for 7 wks to practice my Spanish and for some relaxation (though I wish I could be in a med. spanish program). I guess my question is- have you found out about any study abroad/international opportunities through UIC (ie w/ Spanish-speaking populations)? I can't seem to find too much info. I guess we'll get to practice our Spanish enough given IL's huge Latino pop., but it would be nice to go abroad. Anyway, let me know if you hear anything, and have a great time in Mexico! Chris

hey,
I don't know much about the program at UAG. As far as staying healthy, I think its okay to eat fruits and vegetables as long as you prepare them (cut them open yourself) or its done by someone you know. Throughout my times in Mexico, I've never gotten sick from produce. I did, however, get violently ill from eating at one of those streetside stands. I'd avoid eating food they are selling on the street. Also, be a little careful of dairy - if you buy it in the store its fine, but again on the street....Most food in established restaurants seems to be okay as well.... I'd drink bottled or purified water or any kinds of canned sodas, juices etc. Have fun! |
