Default Undeserving minorities in med school

I do not mean to sound racist. However, I think racism is a huge issue in medicine at the present moment. Schools like Meharry, Morehouse and Howard are averaging flat 3.0 GPAs. I dont even want to know their average MCAT scores are. Minorities are 78% at these schools. For the most part, these schools only accept minorities. Is this fair? I do not think it is. Since when did being a physician be about race or ethnicity. I always thought it was about being a capable individual. I do not mean to discredit these schools. However, I believe that they turn several applicants away each year that are more deserving than the 3.0 minorities that they prefer. This sounds illegal to me. Can someone please explain this to me? If I have offended anyone then I appologize. Replies are greatly appreciated.

Yours,
Caraway

just like I said in the pre-allo forum where you posted this same comment: Private schools get to admit whomever they want.

Here's an idea: Email or call the dean of admissions and ask him/her personally rather than random people who don't know what's going on with any particular medical school.

not based on race they don't. just like a private company can't fire someone for being a woman, black, etc. you sound ignorant when you say things like this.

Now, to the OP. Here are some things i have to say.

First, i had your same exact view and still thing it's a bit shady but try and understand the context. There are many hospitals in cities around the world that are very impoverished and largely black, hispanic, etc. Schools like morehouse and howard are set up to create doctors who will work in these arenas. i can tell you right now that i would never work at MLK hospital in cali... and many others i know would not.

you see, they set up physicians for these communities. so i can see justification for this type of thing.

Default Schools

These schools were established when African Americans were barred from attending other medical schools. This was not so long ago ... I was already born.

They are NOT easy to gain admission to just look at the statistics on applications versus admissions. I am sure that the admission committee looks carefully at each candidate and considers factors that are not so obvious.

Remember that all docs have to pass the boards and graduate and these accomplishments are not easy for anyone.

Thread closed due to SDN TOS Violation (being posted in multiple forums...and being a tired, hashed out ugly topic, IMHO).
