Default Manipal Admissions Competetiveness

It seems that most NRIs favor Manipal for med school. I take it that their volume of incoming applications is high. As an NRI, how competitive is it to get admission for MBBS?

it seems highly competitive. i applied last summer thinking i was a great candidate, but it was a sure let down. i wanted to study med. in india so badly, but i don't think i'd be able to survive more than a week there.. no harm in applying though! do your best!!

Check out American University of Antigua, I was just browsing, and noticed that they have an affiliation with Manipal. So, if you were to apply there, and got accepted, you would have the choice of studying your basic sciences in India or in Antigua, then finish your rotations in the US.

Hope this helps.

Manipal is a bit competitive because of all the NRIs from the Gulf, Africa, Europe, and US who want to go there. I think they are directing most US students to their twinning program with AUA (although, that program didn't exist when I was there, so I know nothing about it). Manipal used to have a twinning with the University of the West Indies. I don't know if it is still there or not. Many US students thought the basic science teaching in Manipal was great, but didn't like the clinical teaching at UWI. I would be hesitant about the AUA thing, but I have a general ant-Carribean bias (probably totally unfounded). UWI was a real university (used to be part of the University of London), as is Manipal. UWI's advantage was their degree is recognised in the UK without having to take the PLAB (USMLE equivalent). Again, I don't know anything about AUA.

They also have a twinning program where you do 2 years in Manipal and the rest in Malaysia. That's where they are sending most of the Malaysian students these days. I think they also take US students. I think that program is decent, but it was only two or three years old when I left.

I would say the safe bet is to try Manipal proper. It is a tried and true program, versus one of the twinnings. But maybe you can talk to someone who has tried AUA and see what they think. There is definitely an advantage to getting US clinical experience.

^ For sure, do what retro says, which is to talk to someone from AUA (I have no clue about this program either, as I just happened to stumble across it). Try heading over to the valuemd.com forums, there may be some answers for you there.

So you got rejected? What were ur hs grades? I did well in hs and am a freshman at Purdue right now. Im thinking about dropping this to go to India for direct med.

well, i applied for this year 2005-06, and got in for MBBS. But I know many others who didn't get in..so, I guess there must be competition. Also, I think Manipal doesn't really care about GPA it cares more about what percentage you get in your physics, chemistry, english and biology classes during hs. Plus if you take AP (advanced placement courses) you get an upperhand in the admission process.

Purdue is great, i started off in Industrial Engineering. I have switched to Health Science, but looking at the admissions process to get into Med School here is quite daunting. Im not looking to take the easy way by going to India, but Im exploring this idea in the interest of being realisitc.

Did you accept the admission to Manipal then? My hs school used a percentage system instead of GPA. I did fine in math (4 on Calc AP). Chem wasnt that hot but i got a 4 on the AP. I didnt take the AP Bio but got 90% for the reg bio class. Does it look decent? Tons of extra-curricular activities/volunteeing.

yes, of course i accepted manipal...it was, after all, my first choice. I have taken 5 APs. As far as percentages go, I got about a 95% for bio, 92 for physics, 94 for english, and 98% for chem (not AP). a 90% isn't bad; maybe your year had some tough competition going on.

have any of you had concerns about getting the residency of your choice after being a Foreign Medical Grad. That is one of my largest concerns right now.

everyone from my batch went into IM or FP. None of us tried for anything else. Partly because that's all we thought we could reasonable get, and partly because we wanted to do those subjects. The general thinking when I was in Manipal was that if you get a 95+ on your USMLEs, you could get Surg and other things. Almost all of us got 95+, so I suppose if you do well in Manipal, you should be able to get a good USMLE score. And you could get other specialties. Most IMGs you meet at the better IM university programs have scores like that though. So I don't know how true it is. In the past, people from Manipal have gotten Surg, Ortho, Anaesthesia, Psych, Neuro, peds, OB-GYN, path, radiation onc (back when it was much easier to get), nuclear med.

It is a risk (even a general assumption) that if you got to school in India, you are going to end up being in IM, peds, med/peds, FP, psych, or neuro.
