I'm starting to feel bad for this forum. Not a single post until now! I had to post something!! I'm assuming that the lack of action in this forum is a reflection of SDN'ers lack of interest in this specialty. That's too bad. Best of luck to all the fellowship applicants out there.

Just checkin'...what makes an applicant a "good" applicant in a field like rheum? Is Rheum research necessary? Above Avg. board scores? There is so much mystery about this process especially in fields like rheum where people aren't jumping outta the building to talk about it! Let me know what your thoughts are. Thanks.

I'm considering Rheum vs geriatrics for lifestyle reasons...

I also plan to do hospice work eventually... any recommendations. I'm trying to do a rheum selective during internship this year so I can get a better idea what the specialty is about. What kind of research is involved- is it mostly bench or is there clinical research to be done?

The rheum lifestyle is great, income is good and you can really make a difference in patient's lives.
The only downside to this specialty is dealing with the chronicity of pain and the fibromyalgia patients. No regrets.

Im a 1st year Rheum Fellow at University of Texas/SA and lovin it!
Minimal stress, lots of opportunities/time to make extra money. Interesting patients, unique diseases with taylored inovative therapies, lots of variety. Appreciative patients who take their medications. Most overnight call issues (rare) can be handled over the phone! Job offers abundant. Need I say more?!

I have a few questions:

What do I need to do to be competitive for a rheum fellowship? I'm in my intern year and I already did a rheumatology elective. I spoke with the faculty at my program and they said that I just need to continue to show interest, research isn't absolutely necessary (I'm still going to try - I'm just now starting a case write up with the 1st year rheum fellow here)... I'm also wondering how many programs I should apply to and how do programs differ (research, clinical experience, etc..)?

Are rheumatologists being trained in pain management?

It would seem like this would be a great training to treat arthritic patients, that way, they wouldnt have to go doctor hopping between rheums, orthos and pain docs.

Only received a couple of inveits at the moment but non from texas. Send and email to the programs I applied and most of the programs are still ranking the candidates. If any new news please fell free to coment

OK, so this is probably a stupid question, but here it goes...

I know I want to do FM. I also know I want to do a fellowship and was thinking about OB. But, I am also really interested in rheumatology. I have been reading up on it and read that you need to come from peds or IM to go into a rheumatology fellowship. So, does that mean I can not do one if I go into FM? Isn't FM really IM and peds combined? If anyone can help clarify the process for me I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

FM isn't IM and peds combined. FM only allows you to do a geriatrics or sports medicine fellowship. The main reason that I can see is that FM residents are trained as intensively as IM or Peds so they would have no right to enter those fields. Basically they don't know enough about IM, Peds, Ob/GYN to be competent enough to be a specialist in any of those fields. I would recommend IM, OB/GYN, or Peds if you want to do a fellowship.

I am appling for rheum fellowship for 2009. I graduated from IM program on 2007. I have 2 research projects, I had over 200 on step I, II, III and I am board certified in IM. Also working at these time in a teaching hospital. I am wondering if that makes me competitive enough to get to a rheum fellowship program I applied to 50 programs. Any suggestions. Thanks

You sound like a solid average applicant for rheum. Probably the top programs may not be available to you unless your research was spectacular or you know someone in the program. If you applied to 50 programs, I don't think you will have problems matching though.

my gf is applying to rheum this yr...her application was in by 12/1. she's a US grad, 2nd yr resident at a university-based program w/ no rheum fellowship. she has more than >200 on steps...no research, however....when do most ppl start getting interviews/declines? she applied to 21 places but her pd seemed to think that rheum was getting quite competitive and that places in CA and MA (where we have family) is a long-shot...based on the activity of the thread, however, doesnt seem much interest in rheum on sdn...

Radon from what I remeber last year I apply basically the same as your GF and only was interviewed by 2 progrmas and I applied to 30 some programs. Last year only around 90% of the applicants matched. I found in FREIDAS that it was the lowest matched among all the subspecialties. The also started sending invites around the end of December and extended until January to March. Also recomend to do some research to help her application get stronger and more competitive. Also Rheum is begining to get really competitive and the ACR is planning to increased more position in the nation for years to come. nothing on the rheum front...really frustrating her! ppl in the other specialities like renal have already got interviews/rejects . seems like rheum is only going to get going after the holidays. somebody told me that they interviewed in march for rheum, and ended up matching at that program!

Please fell free to coment any invites or rejections in the rheum community. And I also agree with Radon I think they will get started after the holiday. GL to everybody these year. Hopfully everyone will match.

I'm applying to my home program in Cali - and I know from what the coordinator says - they don't even start looking at the applications until January... so while I'm still nervous about hearing from places, I think that maybe rheum programs interview a little later (maybe because they don't have as many applicants as other specialties like GI or cards?)

interviews:

u of chicago (PD said they will send out specific dates by 1/22)
cleveland clinic (only 3 interview dates)

hopefully, things are just warming up. nothing from ny for me...

Yes SUNY in NY for me.

Interviewing at Rush, rejected from UCSF. sigh.
There is still one program in Ohio that hasn't downloaded my app yet, but everyone else has. I applied to 25 programs.

i am a new member ..a FMG H1 B holder ??applied in rheum .scores are 88, 83, 80 in 1 , 2 and 3 .have reasearch but not in rheum though.. applied to 65 programs ...

No interviews yet though applied in mid dec ?? whats my scope for interviews ? should i mail programs to find out status of application ??

Interviewing at UPENN and Cleveland Clinic. A lot of programs that I contacted said they will start looking at applications only by mid to late Jan. The fact that applications have been downloaded does not mean a thing, as this is done by the software on their end.

Applied to 25 rheum programs have only heard back from two one in Washington and one in Texas. How many interviews do these program give?

My question is, what happens on these fellowship interviews? Is it chit-chatty what are your interests or are we going to get pimped on Rheumatology?

its basically your interest in rheum, why that location in particular, what do you see your self doing in next years after finishing rheum. They also asked about your research so be very prepared. Best of luck
