Judging by the phrasing of your question, "match for IM" , "research expi" , "reco letters" am I right to assume that you are a foreign medical graduate.
American grads usually have no problems matching into strong IM programs.

1. Apply to lots of programs
2. US Experience, especially in a univeristy program and/or a program you are interested.
3. Hope for the best, because most programs use USMLE scores to weed out IMG's
