How diverse is DMU (school and area)?

Hi,

I am from Chicago and want to apply to a couple of DO schools besides CCOM (I'm doing MD and DO). But I really want a bigger city and because I'm not white I am hesitant about DMU because I don't know if I'd like it. Do any of you have any experience with the school? I am also interested in PCOM but I've heard not being from PA makes my chances... Does anyone have opinions on other DO schools in larger cities (I do prefer either east coast or midwest but many places in the midwest are obviously heavily white, besides Chicago...).

I'd say apply to DMU and get a feel for it if/when you interview there. My short visit didn't strike me as the most diverse place on earth, but I didn't see clones there or anything, either! (no offense to clones, of course... )

UMDNJ leads DO schools in diversity, and has won awards for their ability to recruit a diverse student population, so you should definitely check them out.

Like a lot of areas in the midwest or south, it is not the most diverse locale, but I highly doubt you are going to have people pointing fingers at the little asian girl. (mdapps) If you want a diverse area then south florida (nsu) is pretty diverse. Now, if you are asking where has more people of your particular background, it probably won't be applicable...Most will be black and/or hispanic. PCOM is worth a shot. Your stats are pretty good for most MD schools and more than strong enough for the vast majority of DO schools. I don't think you are going to be a victim of a hate crime wherever you end up...might get a stupid question or two. Evidently, because my dad is Jewish, I was the definitive source of all things Jewish where I grew up....One person actually asked me why I don't have the "curly fry sideburns"....

SOMA is one year in a suburb of Phoenix (some diversity--5th largest city in US) plus three years in another location that can be New York, Seattle, Hawaii, or Phoenix (to name the most diverse locations out of 11 possible locations).

Iowa is one of the most diverse states in the USA. Every race of white person you can imagine can be found there. It is a true melting pot.

If you're looking for a school in a large city with diversity I think TouroCOM-NY takes the cake. It's right in Manhattan in the Harlem neighborhood. I don't think you can get any bigger of a city with any more diversity.

You should never count out a school based on a preconceived notion you have of what it might be like. You'll never know if DMU is a good fit for you unless you go there and see for yourself. Apply, interview, and then decide.

It did not get in the way of the multi-racial presidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama. "Every race of white person you can imagine" voted for this guy, more than for Madam Hillary, and shyster lawyer Edwards, who were whiter than the snow in Iowa. So may be the place is diverse enough. It can't be that bad

I just finished my first year here at DMU and the "lack of diversity" did not bother me at all. Coming from a minority majority state like CA, it was of course a transition from what i'm accustomed to. Yes, Des Moines doesn't have a lot of ethnic restaurants and supermarkets, but they do have them. It won't be like chi-town but it's only 5 hours away and a weekend can sustain any cravings you may have. Like another person stated earlier, yes 97% of Iowans are caucasian but most are very nice and not grumpy like Californians and they don't point at minorities. If you are considering applying DO, consider DMU b/c it's an awesome school and I don't regret attending here (I had an acceptance at a more diverse school - AZCOM). Don't let the lack of diversity scare you. Sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone and experience the "real world." if you have any specific Q's send me a PM.
