Default HPSP March Board 2013

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
Hey everyone, so my application packet was sent to the March 1st Board for review, according to my recruiter. He told me that it takes about 4-6 weeks to hear back from them. I was just wondering how long it took any of you to hear back from the board? Did they contact you directly or do they relay their decision to you through the recruiter?

Also, because my application is so late in the game, I was curious as to weather or not you guys think I'll have a shot in getting the HPSP. I'm already accepted into medical school and will be starting in August. I have a 3.45 cumulative undergrad, a 3.9 cumulative Masters, and a 32 MCAT. Thanks everyone in advanced!

Didn't hear back yet. I read somewhere on one of these threads that the board actually met on March 18th for 3 days, not the 1st like my recruiter had told me. But I guess it's a good thing my package was in on the 1st, hopefully that means I'll be one of the firsts to hear back. 2 weeks to hear back according to many, soooo either the end of this week or early next week I should hear back. Thanks for the support!

Question for you though, how common are GMO tours for AF HPSP students? I hear its pretty common for Navy.

My AF HPSP application went in front of the March 20th board and I just found out today that I was selected! I was expecting a much longer wait since my recruiter told me I wouldn't hear back until mid-April at the earliest. Good luck!

Sometime towards the end of this month. Hopefully I can get into the May 28 COT. I must admit. I have been a little disappointed at the negativity towards the HPSP on this forum. I appreciate the honesty though

Yeahh there is a lot of negativity towards HPSP here, but there also a good amount of positive experiences as well. I honestly do believe those who complain are the ones who signed up for the wrong reasons, money being their motivating factor. I grew up from a military family, lived on military bases around the world my entire life, was in JROTC, and know every caveat that comes with the HPSP agreement and am perfectly fine with it. Most people go in not knowing the full detail of the agreement, and when they get surprised by a GMO tour, deployment, or an annoying chain of command, they freak out. They shouldve known all of this before signing up. IMO.

Do you know if the board for all military branches meet up on the same day? Or does it differ for each branch?

I totally agree. I also grew up in a military family since my Dad took a Navy HPSP scholarship back in the day. I have done a ton of research on the scholarship and really am thankful for even the negative posts bc now I am fully aware of all the drawbacks (i.e. nurses possibly being in charge of me). Coming out debt free is obviously a huge factor in any HPSP student's decision but I also love the military and can't wait to be a part of it. I have a strong desire to serve military families and am willing to take a GMO tour or deployment if it is necessary. But since my dad and older brother are both Naval officers Im sure I am going to get a ton of razzing for going AF!

As far as I know it differs for each branch. Navy met on March 18th and AF met on March 20th this year

Yes I am Air Force also. Still waiting on my security clearance to come back. I guess it takes awhile. My recruiter keeps telling me I should be able to get in the May 28 COT class though.

Congrats! My AF HPSP application went for the Mar. 20 board as well. Were you contacted by your recruiter? I'm anxiously awaiting a decision on mine as well. I worked with a recruiter up in IL. ...wondering if I should contact them regarding any news!

Did you sign immediately or were you given a window to accept?

***SCRATCH THAT****
I head back later this morning from my recruiter that I've been wait-listed. No the worst news but still encouraging I suppose. Apparently I'm ~#20 on the list and I'm told last year they got down to #30 or so on the wait-list due to others declining the scholarship.

Anyone have any advice or wisdom? What are my realistic chances of getting bumped up at this point?

I accepted immediately but there may have been a window. My recruiter sent me the contract the day I was selected so I just signed and sent it right back.

Don't give up, sounds like you still have a realistic chance given that info your recruiter gave you. I know a lot of scholarships do get turned down each year due to people applying for HPSP scholarships with each branch then choosing after that. Let us know how it turns out! Good luck and remember there is always the 3-year scholarship if it doesnt work out this time.

That sucks. I just sent off for my security clearance and my recruiter said 2-3 weeks tops. Wonder why yours has taken so long. Are you a threat to national security or something???

They told me 2-3 weeks originally also. I am prior service Army, and I doubt I am a threat to national security. Haha. I really don't get why it's taking so long though.

You wouldn't think prior service would hold that up but who knows. Best of luck on that. Let us know when your clearance finally comes through.

So it finally came through today, after about 7 weeks. Still no idea why the long wait but at least it's done now.

Its more common for the Navy than it is for the AF but it really depends on what residency you are going for. If you want something competitive it is likely you will have to do a GMO tour to build up your points. But if you are going primary care or general surgery it is less likely since there are more mil residencies for these.

I had my recruiter swear me in and then signed the documents with the program director. 3 weeks? Hopefully it comes in soon. Which ODS are you trying to go too?

I should find out if I am going to COT May 28th soon, so I will let you know if there is still room or if it is full when I hear something.
