I am a soon 2B MD (6 months from now) with great interest in doing research for a few years before entering a residency.

If you're interested in research, then simply contact investigators at the top research programs: Wilmer, MEEI, USC, Wash U, U Penn, and Iowa. There are many openings for post-doc positions. I'm sure you'll find a 2-3 year research position at all of these institutions.
