Hey...say you go through med school do a prelim in med and then do 3 yr residency in anesthesiolgy (the normal route)...five years down the road a family member has a normal problem (flu, bacteria or viral infection, etc...) would i be able to 'diagnose' and prescribe my family member?

p.s. "what if you substiutied 'family member' with 'friend'

bassicly i want to know if you can do basic physician stuff even though you did not residency in im or family physician...

thanks for the help

Don't know enough to comment on that scenario, but...

Seem to have run into several anesthesiologists who've happened across MI's, drownings, accidents, etc where their training really did prepare them to save some lives. Interesting, more than a few of these occured on airplanes!

I'll go out on a limb and say you might be able to diagnose relatively straightforward problems, but as for more complex ones...wouldn't you want to take those to a specialist anyway?

Incidentally, I did know of one older anesthesiologist who used to work in the ER in the good 'ol days; he commented that he did learn there how to take care of common ailments remarkably well, and that training came in handy when his kids were younger...

Incredible stories, actually, miraculous having the right person there at the right time. Interesting, more than a few of these occured on airplanes!

just do a prelim year in medicine before anesth. you'll be fine with all sorts of medical problems. if you want to treat kids and understand OB, then do a transitional year before. don't worry, after internship year, you'll be sick of "medicine" anyways.

you should be able to diagnose simple FP type problems as a 4thyear. not to say that i can, but i'm supposed to. if all else fails, just give a Z-pak.
