Default Step 2 Clinical Skills Preparation

The purpose of the Step 2 CS is to test your clinical and communication skills. This unique exam is a performance, so preparing for it is different from preparing for other exams which test your knowledge and application of content. The USMLE website has quite a bit of information to get you started, including a detailed description of the exam, how it is scored and orientation materials. The orientation materials include the Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS) Content Description and General Information booklet, an interactive practice patient note program, sample patient notes and two orientation videos.

Clinical Skills courses are for students who would like hands-on preparation for the Step 2 CS exam. They allow you to do histories and physical exams on trained patients and then get detailed corrective feedback. You learn how to do all this in the allotted time, which is extremely important. Kaplan Medical offers 5 and 6 day courses, and a Practice Exam which gives you firsthand experience of the Step 2 CS exam.

If you cannot take a course, you may want to purchase a good Clinical Skills prep book, which will inform you of the proper format and communicating methods. Some books also have clinical practice cases.

ECFMG and NRMP both advise doctors to secure their CS test date earlier in the year because there is an annual rush to obtain test slots prior to the end of the calendar year. If you take it earlier, you will be able to ensure that you get a test date when you want and be confident that your Step 2CS results are available in time for the NRMP eligibility deadline in mid-February, 2010.

All CS testing centers are reviewed regularly by NBME staff to ensure that they are all testing and scoring consistently with other CS sites, so where you take the exam should make no difference at all.
