LOR waiver question

On the cover sheet for a LOR there is a check box to waive/not waive your LOR.

There's also instructions for the author telling them to mention in the actual letter if the letter was waived.

So if you check the box on the cover sheet to waive your right *but* the author doesn't mention in the LOR that you waived your right, does the recipient still know you waived your right?

Because if you waive your right then you have no way of knowing if the author actually wrote in the LOR you waived your right.

You're thinking/obsessing about this too much.

The waiver sheet will be included regardless of whether or not the writer mentions your waiver.

ok because i thought only the LOR was scanned into ERAS and not the cover sheet. but if both are shown to the recipient then that's good because then they'll know from the cover sheet that you waived the letter.

The ERAS staff has a stamp -- they stamp the letter as "waived" if the letter writer does not mention it.

is there a "expiration date" for LORs? classmates say your LORs should be less than a year old by the time you apply for residency. is that true?

There is no formal cut-off however if you have a letter that's more than 1y old, people are going to wonder what you've been doing over the last year that you couldn't get another LOR. It raises a bit of a red flag.
