Hey where is a good spot to live? I stayed in Cincy for a summer program but I stayed on Xavier's campus so I really don't know where the good spots to live are at.

I've had Hyde Park and Clifton recommended to me by a friend from Ohio. Hyde Park being a little farther of a commute and a bit pricier but really nice. Close to great shopping and dining. Clifton is right by campus, I believe, and is pretty affordable.

Hey guys, congrats on your acceptance at UC! I graduated from med school there last year. I'm wrapping up my intern year (whew!) and am just so happy with my training. Cincinnati was great, and I feel like I was absoulutely prepared for residency through my experience there. On top of that, I'll always look back on my time in med school fondly... Great group of students as well as residents when I was there. PM me if you have any questions and again- congrats!

As far as housing goes, I live in Hyde Park and love it. I just found my place on craigslist, which is a great option. Clifton isn't exactly the nicest area, but a lot of students live in the gaslight district of Clifton. I also have friends at the med school who live in Piedmont Mews (http://www.piedmontmews.com) or Stetson Square (http://www.stetsonsquare.com), which are literally across the street from the school.

Hey Guys,
An alternative to Hyde Park is Pleasant Ridge. We lived here for med school, but due to the match have to sell our house. Our house would be perfect to have roommates or even would be great for a couple or family with children.

It has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms in a great, central location in Pleasant Ridge (near I-71 Exit 8 Ridge Road)... so it's a 12 minute drive to the Med School. Close to great shopping, downtown and also Newport just across the River! And it's a great value -- at this price you'll save 30-40 thousand dollars over a similar house in nearby Oakley and around 100 thousand dollars for Hyde Park! The rooms are all large, there's lots of closet space, and it's on a quiet cul-de-sac with woods in the backyard. I definitely recommend this house to anyone looking to buy a home in Cincinnati.

Dear incoming UC med students, congratulations on a new chapter in your life! As you are entering medical school, I am finishing up with it. I'm a 4th year student at UC about to graduate. I have matched into a psychiatry residency program in California. If any of you have any questions about anything feel free to ask.

However, right now I understand many of you are interested in finding a place to live, and I am desperate to find someone to take over the lease to my apartment. I am leaving Cincinnati on May 31, but my lease doesn't expire until the end of July. I really want to avoid paying 2 extra months of rent, so if any of you want to take over my lease that would be super awesome. Even if you don't want to move in until July 1 that would at least save me 1 month of rent. Right then, a little about my apartment:

This apartment is very close to campus, right across the street from the VA Hospital. You could literally take home call if you do a rotation at the VA. The 71 bus stop is right at your doorstep. It is about a 10 min walk to the Medical Sciences Building.

It is a 3rd floor converted attic. The rent is $425 per mo, 720 sq ft with 1 bdrm, kitchenette (with dishwasher and electric stove), living room, two large closets, and bathroom. There is a coin-operated washer in the basement (75 cents per cycle) and a dryer that is not coin operated (free to use). Street parking only (I can advise parking strategies), however you won't have to drive very much since east campus is all within walking distance. Garbage is covered by the city. You pay all of your own electric and gas. The water bill is split 4 ways between you, the 1st and 2nd floor neighbours, and the landlord.

The pictures from craigslist make the apartment look very dirty, but unfortunately that's because it's very messy as I am packing and everything is not squared away yet. The blinds on the window is NOT broken! I just didn't pull it straight and didn't realise it when I took the picture.

Congrats again to all those accepted to UCCOM! Excited to meet everyone in the fall. In the meantime I am searching for a female roommate. I've submitted an application at several different apartment complexes within close proximity of the medical school. I currently live in Cincinnati so I'd be happy to do the footwork and send pics if you weren't able to make it to Cinci to apt hunt (i.e out of state). I will also be bringing my living room set and dining table with me so my future roommate wouldn't have to worry about buying any furniture for the common living space. I think it would be great to room with another incoming student along with splitting rent and utilities to bring the cost of living down... Congratulations everyone! Cincinnati is a great medical school!

If anybody is looking for a great place to live, I have a recommendation. I am a 3rd year med student and have lived here all years of med school. The address is 2560 Woodburn Ave. and it is owned by my landlord, Tom Slanker phone # 513 604 2190. He is a GREAT landlord. Very friendly and quick to fix problems. It is literally 4-5 mins driving to med school (straight down Martin Luther King Rd). Rent is great. Runs about $500-600/month which is for a one bedroom . Most units have washer and dryer included and some have dishwashers too . 700 sq feet. He does have other apartments that would be good for students as well so call him up and ask. I'm really glad I found this place. A lot of med students live here (about 5 right now) and 2 Peds residents live across the street in the townhouses which Tom also owns. All us med students here split wireless internet too so that is real cheap (less than $10/month)

Again his # is 513 604 2190 and mention that I (Isabel) recommended you call him and I'll split you my finder's reward with ya!

ROOMS FOR RENT in a recently remodeled house in Oakley/Hyde Park, an awesome neighborhood about 10 minutes from the med school. This is a much safer and more pedestrian friendly area then Corryville (which is where UC is located). You can walk to Oakley Square and Hyde Park Plaza for food/shopping/entertainment!


The house is divided into two separate units, a 4BR/2 full bath and a 2BR/1 full bath and each has their own full kitchen. House also has a shared washer/dryer, central air, basement storage, and reserved off-street parking. I am a second year med student, I own and live in the house, and I only rent to other medical students.

$475/month for a room, plus your share of the utilities (average about $100/month per person). One year lease would start Aug 1. No smokers, no dogs/cats please. This is a great chance to live with other medical students in a very nice area for a good price. Orientation starts a month from today!!! I'm so excited!!! I'm pretty sure this will wear off after the second day of orientation but I am ready to get started with medical school. Congrats to all recently accepted applicants. My wife was accepted about a month ago and we are so excited to be moving up to Cincinnati. Look forward to seeing yall there!

Not to put a downer on the exciting acceptance postings here, but I have a few questions about distribution of financial aid for any M2's or someone who is aware of this:

I am trying to plan my budget for the year and will be spending a lot of money to furnish my apartment. Since there are certain things in the budget provided by the University that I won't be using, I can move some money around. So I basically have figured out the bottom line maximum amount of finaid I can get, subtract out the money owed to school (tuition and fees, lab fee, instruments, books, etc.), then take out an estimated sum to furnish the apartment, then build a monthly budget from there. The main questions I have are:

1. In how many installments is your financial aid dispersed?

From my past experience with grad school, I received it in two installments because it was 2 concrete semesters. Based on the structure of the classes, its not really semesters, but 6 blocks of scheduling. So I am wondering if they just give it all to us in the beginning or split it up into chunks throughout the year.

2. If you waive health insurance, do they still give you the money that was supposed to go towards it and you can use it towards something else?

3. Does anyone have any other tips when it comes to planning your budget? Did you encounter many unexpected costs related to medical school supplies or clothes, etc.? (apart from personal expenses that may vary from person to person)

I would not trust any apartments in that area of cincinnati. Look for something closer to Ludlow, Clifton ave, stetson, piedmont, hyde park, oakley, mt adams, or downtown high rises
