At every pre-vet job I've had, it's a constant battle to make sure that I get at least 30 minutes of weekly exposure to anything that isn't tech work. I know it counts, and its ultimately useful experience, but, christ... there's no need to give me the gasface, like I'm wasting your time, any time I ask for clarification of anything that's actually veterinary in nature. They know why I'm there. If they don't want to fill that role, don't hire me.
I guess for me, the biggest question is then, what HAVE they hired you for?

YOU took the job to get veterinary experience.
THEY hired someone to do tech work. (Just going off your post). Therefore time spent outside this role IS taking away time from what you're being paid to do, and if you get to observe/spend heaps of time with the vet instead of doing other things, the other techs might see this as favouritism, and that you're not pulling your weight.

I understand the frustration, and I do feel they should be more than willing to teach (because ultimately it would make you a better tech too) but I guess I feel that fulfilling what they hired you for needs to be your first priority. Shadowing is the best way to spend 1-1 time with the vets, IMHO. If people want to shadow, I think it should be done on their days off.

I was extremely lucky to get an awesome SA mentor - in fact, he's why I went to vet school at all. But when I wanted 1-1 time, I came in on my days off - I don't think its fair for someone to pay me to mainly watch.

Obviously what I'm saying doesn't apply to just small bits of teaching - everyone should be willing to teach anyone something.

MY RANT:
Cat shelter near me went out and trapped some feral cats on public land. They were feral and had ringworm, so they were euth'd. (This shelter does an amazing job but still have to euth 6000 cats every year due to lack of resources - I don't have a problem with the decision they made).
Aparently many people of the general public do. Because "they own a feral cat"(uh no you don't, you own one that was slightly scared of humans) and "ringworm is so treatable" (yeah sure, you go bath those feral cats) and because "*I* would have taken them!" (if your so committed to cats why do they still have to euth so many?!).

Now people are coming out and saying that there is no evidence to suggest feral cats kill/eat wildlife. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!?!?! :s cared:AARRRGGGHHHH!!!!! I THINK MY HEAD JUST EXPLODED FROM THE STUPIDITY!!!! To put things further into perspective - most of Australias wildlife are small, ground dwelling nocturnal marsupials. PERFECT for cats!!!

AAARRRGGGHHH!!! The poor cat haven!!!

My argument for the feral cat eating wildlife issue is that the #1 killer of wild animals (especially birds) are people. So before we go hunting down every other species that kills wild animals, we should look at ourselves, first. Though, I definitely agree that to say feral cats kill no wild animals is a bit ridiculous.

The job was offered, and accepted, under the specific premise that it would be predominantly for experience. Which is why I accepted substantially lower pay, an unfixed schedule and completely variable weekly hours as compared to the regular staff.

Unhappy

I didn't pass the chem exam. I have no idea what my score was and I have no information other than an email that states that 'LMMS did not pass the exam taken'.

I am defeated in more ways than I can express.

I want to thank everyone here who has supported me through all the insanity that has plagued my quest for my dream over the past few years. You guys have been amazing; and I know that you're all going to become amazing vets.

LMMS,

I am so sorry to hear that news. It sounded like an insanely hard and unfair exam. I think I speak for everyone when I say we completely support you and are here for you, whatever you need!!

Major hugs.

Holy snikes!!!! I am sure they will fix it fairly quickly though. I had someone take money out of my account at atms all around the city a few years back and the bank replaced my funds right away as they could tell it was fradulent.

LMMS I am so very sorry. I remember you saying how bizarre the test was. Is there anyway you can convey this to the school?

Sorry to hear about your exam. It sounds like a garbage situation that you didn't have much control over...

How does this specifically effect your plans, LMMS?

Thank you, everyone, for the support. I'm sitting at work simply numb; and just want to crawl into a hole and cry. However, doing that would not only be unprofessional, but absolutely embarrassing. Thus, I'm doing my best to continue to hold a flat affect; but I know it's not working very well.

To answer the questions that have been put forth...

Abney - I really don't know if I can convey the issues to the school; nor do I think it will matter at this point. I have requested to review the exam to see where I went wrong simply for my own personal edification. However, I doubt if that's going to change anything either.

DSM - The short of it is that this now signifies the end. I am no longer eligible to enter the only school that thought enough to wait list me and cannot continue to beat the dead horse that I have been for the last 10+ years. It's over.

Again, thanks to everyone for the support.

LMMS, I am so sorry That is so painful to go through, I can't even imagine the despair you must be feeling. I wish there was something I could do to help, ANYTHING! If you need anything, or want any cookies or brownies (i am a top notch baker) I will send them ASAP.

So sorry LMMS, is there any hope from the school?!?

Maybe take the day to be miserable, then come back tomorrow and take another look at the whole thing.

I know that if I got shut down by one chem test, after all of that work, it would haunt me for the rest of my life.

There has got to be a way around such an insignificant event...

It's so dumb. So so dumb.

At least call Anna at some point and talk to her about the test - they will continue to use it in the future, and if it's a pile of crap, they should know.

I was thinking something similar. I just keep thinking that the test was so outdated and everything that something can be done.

So sorry to hear this LMMS. I agree with Dsmoody. Take a day. Eat a whole quart of ice cream, and drink a bottle of wine (maybe not at the same time ). Come back and re-evaluate. Only you are able to know when you are truly done with this whole process, but at least decide it on a day when your head is semi-clear .
We're all here for you no matter what you need.

Sorry LMMS about your exam. I would defiantly talk to the prof though and express your concerns. If the test was scantron make sure your little bubbles correlate (I have made this mistake on a biochem test once).

Don't give up though!! The thought of you giving up makes me sad.

On a different note, I called the bank and they were able to work out my account thing. I guess there is a computer glitch that is making it appear there is $0 in both my accounts? The lady said it should be fixed this afternoon.

I feel for you, LMMS!!! I do think it's unreasonable for this school to have you jump through all these hoops even though you've taken the classes already Yes, take a few days to regather. I want you get that DVM! Apply to more/different schools next cycle! I remember my former lab manager applying to med school at least 3-4 times before finally getting in and this year he's getting his MD (Top 25 school too)!

*Cue music* Don't Stop Believin'!

Oh thank God! I was going to offer to send you some money!! (LOL not that I can afford it )

I am defeated in more ways than I can express.

I want to thank everyone here who has supported me through all the insanity that has plagued my quest for my dream over the past few years. You guys have been amazing; and I know that you're all going to become amazing vets.
I'm coming in late on this, but dude, that sucks. I am sorry in a major way - if you need to vent/scream/whatever, we all understand. *hugs*

Don't want to take away from LMMS. But I have to rant.

My clinic supervisor just abandoned our vaccine clinic and is taking a leave of absence. No explanation or thought to how we are going to survive without her. I have no idea what we are going to do. If she needed help, she should have asked for it. Hope we can swim.

The bank once messed up my previous boss' account, except in the other direction. He was a millionaire for a short while. He didn't think to print out his online bank statement but the bank quickly found their error and corrected it.

Sprained left ankle. Doc thinks I probably tore my right LCL and possibly my ACL (again). This is in addition to the bucket tear I've had in my right meniscus for the last 15 months.

I had my first knee surgery at 18, and doc says I'm looking at a full knee replacement before I turn 50, which is less than 20 years away.

I've been a pretty active person despite the meniscus tear, but now I'm totally out of commission, and all I want to do is drink beer, watch hockey, and get fat(er).

Really, really miserable right now.

Aw soopr.

I re-tweaked my ACL as well - had a partial tear a year and 6 months ago, took about 4 months off and did some PT, then went back to playing hockey. Been playing 2-3 times per week since then, but of course last weekend I decided to go and play for my class's IM flag football team and obliterated it again. I have no idea why I'm fine on skates but cleats are a no-go. Every time I tried to cut I fell down and the last time I felt it tweak again. I'm currently hating myself for this and hoping I am okay to play in a hockey tournament at the end of the month.

Sorry to hear this I've had my share of musculoskeletal problems literally since I could walk (I had forest gump braces when I was 2 ), so I feel your frustration. I say you drink beer and watch hockey like I'm doing right now!
Cheers!

I was born with chihuahua type knees. My kneecap doesn't sit into the femoral groove properly so it is constantly grinding. I feel your pain....

I need to have surgery but I really don't want to. Not until I absolutely need it.

I feel your pain, soopr and nyanko. I partially tore my right ACL in February, playing hockey. Stayed off ice, did lots of PT, and spent as much time as I could in the gym. My knee was getting better and I skated a month later. Stepped wrong off my porch a week after skating and oliberated my right knee. Ugh . Full ACL tear and a meniscal tear (likely there since February that worsened) - both need surgical repair. Off ice until January at the earliest.

Thanks, guys! I've known about it for a little over two weeks, but it's really starting to get to me because it's so nice outside, and all I want to do is go for a run or ride a bike or just freaking walk around outside!

I was supposed to have a little arthroscopic surgery for the meniscus last year, but I declined it because I could run, skate, jump, do squats, yadda yadda. I'm trying to avoid surgery because the last time I had it I had terrible withdrawal (like intervention style!) from the pain meds.

Nyanko, hope yours is just a little tweak and will be 100% after some ice and rest!!!

This WW game is really one of the few things making me smile right now!

Emiloo - don't worry, beer and hockey are totally happening right now. AND I have a cat on my lap. Doesn't get much better.

DVM - I hear you. The last time I had surgery was almost 14 years ago and it was awful. But I've heard that it is much, much better and with less recovery time now!

Rusty - that is one LONG recovery! So sorry to hear it. After I finished my PT I was afraid to go in any direction except forward for, oh, four or so years.

So much pain. My back hurts so bad and I already took 5 Ibuprofens and it's still terrible. I don't wanna take more, because I have to stay up to study for my chem test tomorrow morning - which I only heard horror stories about. Great.

I guess thats one plus to having a knee that's already about 50% titanium and who-knows-what-other artificial components. Takes more than one wrong step or two for me to tweak anything, although I certainly feel achy when the weather changes!

Feel better everyone!
