I have 2 yrs of research experience with an abstract (does this even help?). My sgpa is around a 3.3 also. I got a 28 on my MCAT but will probably retake it. I go to Michigan if that helps too. I've only shadowed my dad whos a pediatrician, but I'm not sure if that counts. I also shadowed a pathologist for a day.

I just started volunteering at the hospital in the summer so I have like 40+ clinical hrs and will probably keep doing it next semester as well.

I was webmaster for a ping pong club and am currently on an events planning committee for habitat for humanity. I am also a FAST member for red cross (CPR and FA certified) and will probably do a few events soon.

I was wondering what my chances were for my in-state schools (Louisville and Kentucky) and what I can do to help my application. thanks

With Kentucky's median acceptee stats being 3.8/31, and Louisville's at 3.7/30, your odds don't look great. Overall chances of those applying with similar numbers (3.3/28) are 25% at best and include those with significant modifying factors to their application like completing an SMP (Special Masters Program), only one bad year of grades, rural med interest, adding to a school's diversity in some way, etc.

There is no problem with shadowing a parent, so long as they don't write a LOR for you, but with your dad's connections, setting up additional shadowing to broaden your experience over winter break, should be easy. I'm glad you've already followed a pathologist.

I'd consider a year of clinical experience on the application to be the minimum. Try to have a total of at least 150 hours by the time you apply.

Two years of research is terrific. If the published abstract is Searchable (like on PubMed) that is helpful.

I'm glad to see you have some leadership and nonmedical community service. Try to make that stronger to help you stand out.

To improve the application, a string of straight As before applying, to establish a steep upward grade trend would help, as would a much stonger MCAT score. You might consider an additional year of school before applying to further mend the GPAs. You could consider either doing an SMP, or adding DO schools (for which your stats are currently much more in line) to your application list.
