Announcing - An Ophthalmology Book for Medical Students and an Ophthalmology Audio MP3 for Med Students! As a student... a medical student, it's hard to know where to start in studying for an Ophthalmology rotation. The fact is, I didn't want to read a 1000 page book for a two week rotation (even if I was going into Ophthalmology!) When I started, there was one book on the market that was small enough to be a great introduction - Ophthalmology Made Ridiculously Simple - but I wanted a little more detail than I found in the book. So I Wrote... Ophthalmology: A Brief Review for Nurses, Medical Students, & Ophthalmic Technicians available at ApolloAudiobooks.com. Ophthalmology: A Brief Review The book is full of details on ophthalmic conditions and treatments - enough to lay a firm foundation for your Ophthalmology rotation. Because I used audio tapes to study throughout medical school, I have also made the book available in audio MP3 format available at apolloaudiobooks.com. Our motto is: LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY before your rotation.

Introduction to Ophthalmology a Brief Review
Why write a book about ophthalmology in the first place? There a hundreds of ophthalmology texts out there... why is this one different? The answer is this book was written for you! As a medical student, I did four ophthalmology rotations around the country to see what the different programs had to offer. My favorite book, by far, was Ophthalmology Made Ridiculously Simple. Its a great book, but I wanted more information. So my second favorite book was the Washington Manual of ophthalmology - but 1000 pages is too much for me to read. I wished there was something in between... and now there is! Ophthalmology a Brief Review available at LuLu.com. The book is 71 pages (not 1000) and jam-packed full of information that will make you a star in your rotation. Why do an audio version of the textbook??? I used audiobooks to study all the way through medical school and had great success. Unfortunately the best books aren't available from the major publishers - so I started my own company to make medical audiobooks - and here we are. The AUDIOBOOK VERSION available at LuLu.com contains all the information that is in the book (not to mention accurate pronunciation of ophtho terms - so you don't just know the answer, you know how to pronounce it!). The CEORN and Ophthalmology A Brief Review for Nurses and Medical Students....
The CEORN is the Certification Examination for Ophthalmic Registered Nurses. I was once asked to prepare a lecture for nurses studying for the CEORN. The two books that were most recommended for the CEORN were impossible for me to find. One CEORN book was out of print, and the other was on back order (for nine months now, I still haven't received it). For this reason, I decided to publish Ophthalmology: A Brief Review for Nurses, Medical Students, & Ophthalmic Technicians as a "PRINT ON DEMAND" textbook at LuLu.com. That way the book will NEVER BE OUT OF PRINT! Basically, I developed a curriculum that nurses studying for the CEORN would find useful and wrote the text. Along the way, I discovered that Ophthalmology: A Brief Review for Nurses, Medical Students, & Ophthalmic Technicians was an excellent text for all members of the healthcare team including ophthalmic billing specialist, ophthalmic coders, medical students on an ophthalmology rotation, and ophthalmic technicians and OR technicians in the eye room. The book gives you the basic knowledge, and beyond, to be a contributing member of the ophthalmic healthcare team. What's more, I made the book available in printed text, PDF download, and MP3 audiobook download so that you can study using the method that is best for you! Check out the Reviews, Free Previews of the Audio and Textbook Version of this Review for the CEORN at ApolloAudiobooks.com. Wishing You All Success on the CEORN with Ophthalmology A Brief Review! LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY before your rotation!
Where do you start while studying for your ophthalmology rotation??? I suggest a basic understanding of anatomy as laid out in Ophthalmology: A Brief Review. This section is laid out in a logical thought process. The structure's name, then what it is, where it is, and what it does. Check out the basic anatomy below. • SECTION 1: ANATOMY & EMBRYOLOGY Let's begin with a review of basic ocular anatomy and physiology • Eyeball Anatomy Cornea- the clear, transparent window in the front of the eye. Sclera- white part of the eye that is continuous with the Cornea Limbus- junction between Cornea and Sclera Conjunctiva- skin that covers the Sclera Tenon's Capsule- fibrous tissue that is located between the Conjunctiva and Sclera Iris- pigmented eye muscle behind the cornea with an opening for light (called the Pupil) Trabecular Meshwork- at the Cornea/Iris junction, it drains Aqueous Humor from the eye to the Canal of Schlemm Ciliary Body- pigmented eye muscle behind the Iris that creates Aqueous Humor and changes the shape of the Lens Lens- focuses light on the Retina (remember, the Cornea and Lens are both necessary to focus light on the Retina. The Cornea is actually more powerful than the Lens) Zonules- ligaments that extend from the Ciliary Body to the Lens to hold it in place Anterior Chamber- Aqueous-filled space between the Cornea and Iris Posterior Chamber- Aqueous-filled space between Iris and Lens Vitreous Cavity- Vitreous-filled space between the Lens and Retina Vitreous Humor- a jelly-like substance that becomes more liquid with age Aqueous Humor- a liquid, plasma like substance that flows from the Posterior Chamber to the Anterior Chamber Retina- innermost layer of the eye that contains photoreceptor and senses light Choroid- middle layer of the eye that provides some (1/3) of the blood supply to the Retina via the Choriocapillaris Uvea – pigmented structures of the eye including Iris, Choroid, and Ciliary Body Sclera- outermost layer of the eye (see above) Optic Nerve- sensory nerve that carries messages from the Retina to the Brain Central Retinal Artery and Vein- pass through the Optic Nerve to supply most (2/3) of the blood supply to the Retina Fovea- the area of sharp, distinct vision in the retina TAKE HOME POINT - The vitreous gel is responsible for the conditions known as floaters. Floaters occur as the vitreous gel becomes more and more liquid with age. It is a natural process that everyone experiences. However, floaters can be a sign of something more dangerous - such as a retinal hole, retinal detachment, or hemorrhage into the vitreous cavity. How do you tell the difference? As the ophthalmologist, you will perform a retinal exam with "Scleral Depression." Scleral depression allows the ophthalmologist to evaluated the entire retina, out to the Ora Serrata (where the retina ends and the pars plana begins).
