Hello everyone,

There is a "surprise" opening for a surg path fellow for the upcoming academic year, 2011-2012, at Pennsylvania Hospital, which is part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia.

I am a resident at another program in Philly, but have rotated at Pennsy and can't say enough good things about it.

The department has six faculty members, all of whom are excellent surgical pathologists. Dr. Brooks, the chair, is a well-known consultant in soft tissue pathology. There are two new AP/CP residents per year, two SP fellows, and one soft tissue/bone fellow. The fellowship is not very service-intensive, but you will get exposure to lots of great material (including an unusually large amount of soft tissue/bone pathology). The group has a "private practice" atmosphere with many of the benefits of being in an academic center, including material and resources for research.

My understanding is that Penn is able to sponsor H1B visas relatively easily.

I've pasted below a blurb from the program director. For anyone who is still looking for something to do in 2011-2012--this is a terrific opportunity.

We have openings for one position for this coming July 2011 in our Surgical Pathology Fellowship Program. Pennsylvania Hospital is located in Center City Philadelphia. It is part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) and has a Residency program as well as Fellowship programs in Surgical Pathology (SP) and Soft Tissue Bone pathology.
The SP fellows are exposed to a wide variety of cases including many tumor cases from Breast, GYN, Head and Neck, Brain, Bone and Soft Tissue, GU, and Colorectal sites. The fellows oversee junior residents, have graduated responsibility for their own cases at sign out, attend and assist at a variety of tumor boards, and may rotate at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on 1-3 one month electives of their choice. There is time for reading and opportunities to review and study past cases and perform research.

Residents and fellows in the UPHS Pathology system have exceptional access to a variety of conferences, research lectures, teaching conferences, and enormous image library.

Interested candidates should:

2) forward a CV together with three letters of reference as soon as possible to Dr. Tunde Farkas, Residency Director, Pennsylvania Hospital, 800 Spruce St., Philadelphia, PA 19107.
Reference letters can be faxed (Fax number 215-829-7564) or e-mailed ([email protected]).

The University of Pennsylvania is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer; women and minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
