When I seen this, I thought for sure I was looking at a dead dog. I can't believe that someone would do this to a dog!

I didn't know which thread to put it in. It's so outrageous that I started one.

Good luck Patrick :luck:

That's so awful :( I hope he pulls through.

We're rooting for Patrick over here at my shelter (also in NJ). I heard he's doing much better! Poor pittie :(

<3 <3 <3 to Patrick and  to people.

Wow, I can't believe he was still alive when they found him. I hope he pulls through, and hopefully they can find whoever did that to him!

I just got done reading all the updates. I hope he pulls thorugh. i really curious whta the foriegn body is.

Gah! Made the mistake of reading this thread right after the one concerning the raising cost of vet school.

What a depressing night!

Wow, I had heard the story but I hadn't seen the pictures. I will definitely be keeping that poor guy in my thoughts and pulling for him.

If people haven't heard or haven't been following the case, the woman pleaded (pled?) not guilty to charges of animal abuse! HA!

Oh I hope for a happy ending for Patrick! <3

Another case of just how cruel people can be,though not as extreme (has a happy ending!):

Whoa... I don't know that I would have even realized there was a dog in there. I can't even tell which end is the front.

:xf: for Patrick... I'm not sure which is more horrifying- the condition he's in, or the fact that that monster threw him down a 22-story garbage chute. It's amazing he's still alive.

My heart goes out to Patrick. He is an inspiration, a fighter, and a cutie!
As for the previous owner (can I even call the monster that?) :diebanana:

This made me cry and I am not an emotional person. I am continually amazed at the unconditional love dogs have, even when they've been through so much.

I'm so happy that this little guy is doing so much better. But I can't say that this is the worst thing that I've ever seen. People suck.

I'm glad that they at least found the person responsible. I really hope the judge throws the book at her and she gets a maximum sentence. It sickens me that someone can do this to a dog and watch it slowly starve to death and then throw it out like the daily trash....literally.

I didn't know which end I was looking at either. There was a cute dog underneath all of that mat. Can you imagine the smell?

We had a dog like that come in to our clinic about 1 year ago, a Pekinese . . . It was ******* awful. Old, missing an eye (surgical removal so at SOME point someone cared for it), pneumonia, starving, covered in mats that extended 4-5 inches past the ends of his feet, caked in feces, urine, nails growing around and back into his pads.

It has obviously been months since he'd been able to walk.

When we did radiographs we saw a safety pin located somewhere dorsally. We had no idea if he'd eaten it or if it was buried in his fur. We never found it, but when we took films a second time, after shaving him, it was gone.

He died in less than 48 hours but at least we got to take him outside to feel the sun on his face before he went.

As far as I know, we never found the abuser and no charges were ever filed.

That dog will probably haunt me forever. The story is here (not trying to turn this thread into a linked list of poor abused dogs)

I can't believe people have the capacity to treat an animal like this and continue functioning and living as a human being??!!

I am praying and rooting for Patrick and a great recovery!!! And new stable and loving environment! :)

Absolutely awful...:(

New video, scroll down to the bottom. Patrick still looks like a skeleton but at least he has gained 2 lbs! Such a cutie in his green sweater :)

Okay, so, according to this article, the prosecuted woman tied up a dog in a stairwell and skipped town, whereas it was an ENTIRE APARTMENT COMPLEX that let the dog starve for six weeks, until somebody finally bagged it up and threw it away.
This just makes the story all the worse for the sake of humanity, because it wasn't just one cruel act by one disgusting person. It was an entire community of people who had to walk around this dying dog each day when they went to and from their apartments.
Something is seriously wrong with the world.

Oh my god. That is even more awful, which I didn't think was possible. How sick do you have to be to leave the dog lying there for nearly two months when you walk past it every day? How could every SINGLE person in that complex walk by and ignore that dog? Why didn't a single one call the police?

Some days I want to move to the south pole and live with the penguins.

I know what you mean.
As for Patrick, it's really hard from the news coverage to get a clear idea of what happened to him. The woman isn't the one who threw him in the trash, though that's what other articles have implied. They say she tied him to a stairwell and left for a week, but then they say that other people had been complaining about him for six weeks. ??? Any way you slice it, somebody should have done something loooong before it was ever done. At least the custodian who changes the trash had the heart to do something about it, since it looks like nobody else gave a crap.

Sometimes I wonder if I should go into law and spend my life trying to work towards increasing the severity of consequences of animal abuse and neglect. It's so frustrating when a beautiful animal is abused and all the owner gets is a slap on the wrist and a couple hundred dollars in fines. I believe such neglect is worthy of jail time. But then again, there's that whole argument about society supporting these low lives while they're in the system.

Just can't win.

I spoke a lot about wanting to apply public health knowledge to wildlife medicine in my interview, and one of my interviewers told me about a DVM he knew that practiced wildlife medicine for fifteen years, then quit and went back to law school.

She reasoned that she could make a significantly greater impact in wildlife medicine and conservation by amending public policy than she could by treating one injured animal at a time.

Interesting ... it almost seems to make sense for many of us who want to make a huge impact on the way society deals with animal crimes. But then again, who wants to go to law school? (cough:iknowidon't:cough)

BTW, Congrats on your acceptance phaedraeos!

Haha thanks!!

I believe it is appropriate here to mention that my mother, father, and step-father are all lawyers. And my step-mother is a paralegal.

Look at how well Patrick is doing!

I know a wildlife vet who actually did the opposite - JD then DVM. ohmygoddebtttt.

He's looking awesome, I've been following his progress on facebook. His eyes just make me melt!

Alliecat - congrats to you!

I see you are from NC... I think I know exactly who you are talking about! She is such a sweet person; I shadowed her while she was in residency and we still exchange emails occasionally. Small world!

Very proud to have matched for an internship at Garden State Veterinary Specialists, where Patrick is receiving such excellent care.

Hey alliecat, I saw this old (2009) comment a few minutes ago in regards to internships/residencies ...

Good lord. What if your undergrad GPA is considerably lower than your vet school GPA? Certainly they'd put more weight on the vet school GPA...right?!

If my (*#$&*(&#$ undergrad GPA comes back to haunt me ONE MORE #$#@$# TIME...... you have GOT to be kidding.

... and just wanted to say: Congrats! :D:D

Awww, thanks!! :) Hopefully it'll hold true for residency application next fall..... :xf:  :luck:

Thanks for reminding me. :) Amazing how quickly time goes by and how much changes......

I am 100% smitten for this dog and I think about how he's doing all the time. Thanks for the update.

Danger, Will Robinson...the whole apartment complex ignoring the problem is called the "bystander effect", and it occurs across cultures. Like the guy who was stabbed in NYC and numerous people just walked by while he died on the street.

Anyway, there are crappy people in all cultures. There are cultural norms involving animals (and people, too) in other countries that make a lot of Americans/Europeans/Australians/etc. cringe. What that woman did was seriously messed up. If you subscribe to the Patrick Miracle on Facebook, you will read about really messed up things happening to animals every day. But, if you plan on going into veterinary medicine, even if not practicing with the public, making generalizations about race is probably not the best approach.

Read what I wrote and want to add after thought: generalizations about race in any field or in life in general, are not cool or remotely acceptable. You might want to add "posted racist comment on online forum" under the "stupid things I've done" thread.

Consider this; lambasting someone over the truth, no matter how politically incorrect, is more immoral than stating the facts. You might want to re-evaluate your response to my post, which was well within the realm of fact.

But your facts are made up. Just because you think those thoughts does not make them fact. Show me a study that proves that African Americans abuse animals more frequently than other races. This has nothing to do with political correctness. It has to do with your overt racism.

It is your narrow-minded opinion, not fact.

Fact: what the woman did was wrong

Fact: nobody except for the maintenance workers in the building (who may be black) did anything about it.

Fact: wrong is not limited to specific ethnic groups, races, religious groups, PTAs, political affiliations, or breeds.

Fact: there are people of different ethnicities on this forum. You would do well to be respectful of others.

If it is the "truth", then why did you delete your post?

Clearly you are only interested in spouting pretentious and meaningless garbage. But by all means, please, provide the links to studies that show your stated "empirical evidence" - as you claim there is. I would be fascinated if you could actually find a scientific study that links animal abuse to human skin pigmentation. And, if by chance, you can't find one, feel free to use a "science doesn't prove lots of things" comment, or something of that nature.

Holding you accountable for your racist comment has nothing to do with political correctness. I have no tolerance for the spreading of pernicious lies.

Edit: I have German/Irish history. Certainly no violence there. Or did you mean to point out that violence is a part of every culture, including African? Glad to see you used the "most things in the world aren't backed by scientific evidence" comment. That makes the belief that the tooth fairy is real truly meaningful.

That makes the belief that the tooth fairy is real truly meaningful.

Fact: Because of overt political correctness, a study about the tooth fairy would never make it to the light of day in the current political environment, no matter how important it could be.

Fact: No scientific study has ever disproven the existence of the tooth fairy.

Fact: Children put teeth under their pillows at night, and there is money there in the morning. You can't explain that.

Fact: I stand by my first post, which is this one.

This is silly. There are countless people who have common sense who will not defend the truth because they know they'll be attacked by the PC police on this board. People have been conditioned to shrink at the word 'racist', which was designed to do nothing more than stop an unpopular viewpoint.

In fact, the moderator first gave me a warning last night after deleting my original post and then a infraction this morning because I defended it with the post previous to this one trying to silence me.

Empirical evidence doesn't need to be put into a study to be valid, it just needs to be witnessed.

It's common sense that blacks as a whole don't care about animal abuse; they're behind a grossly disproportionate amount of it. If you know how to use a keyboard, you can check out the 'African American' response to Michael Vick.

If you see anything politically incorrect you won't entertain it as a possibility, that's called being 'close minded' kiddies. You need to think about that and then maybe you can get a shampoo to wash the **** off your head after it's been up your ass for so long.

I thought about the "fact" component of this, and thought I smelled the stench of something all too familiar. So I looked at your previous posts and my suspicions were confirmed, specifically by:

"I'm a white legal American citizen and I'm afraid of being targeted by Mexican criminals because I'm white. I'm also concerned that I'll have to learn gutter Spanish to read roadsigns. I'm especially concerned for single white women stuck in areas flooded by Mexican criminals because of the complete lack of conscious they have regarding what they call 'gringo bitches'."

The link to the McCarville Report (banned in "red" China!) was a nice touch, too. Racist white male aged 18-40 who thinks that people give a crap what he thinks. And is paranoid.

This has nothing to do with being PC, it has to do with respect for others. And I'll break the news to you: not every citizen of the United States is a white male aged 18-40.

Thanks for pointing that out Marsala - I'm done wasting my time! Back to Patrick.

Alhazred - I guess ya got me on that one ;)
