Default Anyone else attending Mayo's Campus Visit?

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
Is anyone else planning to attend Mayo's campus visit on August 3rd? My husband is flying out with me for the visit, but we don't know anybody in the area. If anyone else is going, I think it would be great to touch base and maybe explore the city together or at least chat about how wonderful it would be to attend Mayo.

Likewise, if anyone has any recommendations for restaurants or activities, I would love to hear them. Thanks!

Newt's

Their burgers are fantastic.

It's right on campus, too!

Enjoy the tour, you're going to s#%t your pants at how awesome it is.

You could also ask on the Mayo school specific forum. More people may see respond there.

you are flying out to rochester (middle of nowhere) for a medical school tour? i'd seriously consider other vacation plans.

the medical school campus felt really underwhelming for me. the hospital was awesome though -- but cmon, it's a hospital, not an amusement park.

I feel like I need to find out if Mayo and Rochester are as amazing as I've led myself to believe. I would certainly like to figure all this out, and if my hubby and I could imagine our family living there, before I spend considerable time and anxiety applying next year. I'm not expecting an amusement park, but I am expecting to understand the "Mayo" environment a bit better.

Don't worry, the second half of our vacation involves whitewater rafting in Gatlinburg. Can't argue the fun in that!

Ooooh, please send me a PM. This sounds like it could be entertaining.

Why does everybody hate on Rochester... It's not that bad. There are certainly worse places to have to live for four years.

Unless you've got money to burn I would hold off on visiting until you are invited to interview. What is cheaper, the plane ticket or the ~$75 to apply?

App season is 80% unpredictable and you will be anxious no matter where you apply. Best just to apply to as many places as you would like to attend/can afford to apply to and enjoy the ride. Cast a wide net and use interviews & second looks to evaluate the options you have.

Yes... You (joe applicant) have roughly a 1% chance of ending up at Mayo.

Unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket and consider this some sort of twisted vacation, I'd pass.

Wish I knew about this earlier, I have friends who like in the Twin Cities and could easily wrap a weekend trip to visit them with a day at Mayo. Maybe next summer, I have a couple years yet.

what does a campus visit entail? Is it open to the public? I've never heard of this before, but that's really cool!

I know a few friends who road tripped one summer to visit national parks and do some general exploring. Along the way they stopped at several medical school campuses and most schools were happy to offer tours. In the end, this experience made a difference when it was time to finally select a school to attend.

If one were road tripping like this then yes, I think it would be worth while and an excellent opportunity to view the schools at a less stressful time. However, I think NickNaylor's statement was in reference to going out of one's way just to visit the med school, rather than taking a few hour detour.

Wish I had the opportunity to check out a bunch of my school's this summer, for me at least it will have to wait because of work until I (hopefully) get interviews and (again, hopefully) second looks.

I loved Mayo when I visited during my interview. It went from "the-good-school-that's-in-the-middle-of-nowhere" to my first choice med school. Amazing facilities, well groomed neighborhood. Unfortunately, I was waitlisted and later chose to decline the withdraw.

But I have to agree with what others are saying. They accept so few students that it seems odd to get worked up before even getting an invitation to interview. You'll have plenty of time explore Mayo during the interview since it's really not all that big.

As much as I like the school, I got this odd "mirage" vibe from it. All around, it's farmland. Then all of a sudden, you see a flashy city, lots of lights, popular retail stores and modern buildings. But unlike places like Vegas, the area has relatively few people to make the urban landscape seem warranted. Nothing wrong with that, but it's an odd feeling coming from a big city.

I'm pretty sure you'll like what you see. If you have the time and money, I'd say sure, check it out. Best of luck to you. If you like it, I hope you make it in. They seem to have things really figured out there.

Very well put--I had a very similar reaction. (With the addition of a very weird shuttle ride in from MSP on which we were treated to all of the van-driver's theories on UFOs, the second coming, and Israel. Welcome to Michele Bachmann's state!)
It's an amazing school and the facilities are top notch, but visiting the campus isn't substantially different from checking out any other well-off, recently built/renovated hospital. Applications, secondaries, and especially interview trips are mucho expensive. Save your pennies!
